A video clip shared on X shows California Gov. Gavin Newsom saying that the state delivered universal healthcare “regardless of preexisting conditions, ability to pay, and immigration status.” The post frames the remarks as Newsom expressing pride in a policy that covers individuals regardless of legal status. Online users have reacted to the footage and accompanying commentary, focusing on the costs borne by state taxpayers.

In the video, California Gov. Gavin Newsom sits in a Morning Joe interview and says, “We’ve expanded health care controversially; I’m not naive & I’ll take the grief. I said I’m committed to universal health care & I meant it. We delivered it regardless of preexisting conditions, ability to pay & immigration status.” The short clip does not show the rest of the conversation.

According to the accompanying post text, the remarks are presented as Newsom expressing pride in a policy that extends healthcare coverage in California without regard to immigration status. The post claims this requires hardworking state residents to cover the costs, though independent confirmation of the specific framing is not provided in the clip itself.

Reactions Flood In Over the Governor’s Status Quote

Some users focused on the lack of a public vote, with one writing, “We never get to vote on any of this. No one voted to give free health care to third-world illegal immigrants or make the State a sanctuary.”

Others raised cost concerns, including a commenter who said, “This is exactly why my insurance premium at work went up 47%. This is complete *expletive*. I didn’t agree to pay for illegal aliens,” and another who noted, “He set aside $3 billion for free healthcare for illegal aliens. Then after the program was implemented, the cost went up to $8 billion.”

A different perspective appeared in replies defending the approach, such as “Yes, hypocrite, we provide care to anyone who needs it. Full stop.”

Additional comments questioned the overall policy, with one stating, “WE DID NOT AGREE TO THIS!!! LIAR!”

Newsom’s remarks have since become part of a broader online conversation about California’s healthcare system, with supporters arguing that access to medical care should not depend on immigration status and critics questioning who should bear the financial burden. As debate over the state’s policies continues, his comments have added fresh fuel to an already divisive discussion over healthcare, immigration and public spending in California.
