A pop-up gathering in New Jersey forced police to impose a curfew that could extend into this weekend, affecting Memorial Day plans. There have been multiple reports since from police saying that “fights broke out and people jumped on cars.” Because of this incident, residents are furious at the thought of having to change their plans.

Hundreds gathered on May 19th in Pier Village, causing alleged chaos that forced the town to “use its alert system to tell residents to take shelter.” Six people have been arrested following the incident, while police continue to monitor the area. A New Jersey teacher posted on TikTok, calling out the “awful” chaos that happened. Her video has been viewed over 52,000 times. In it, she shared a clip of the footage that caused the curfew, hoping it would help people understand “why police presence is so important.”

The footage reveals packed sidewalks, multiple police officers, and shouting. The New Jersey teacher described the situation as “pure chaos” and stated that “this isn’t a family-friendly event.” Furthermore, she added, “This isn’t anything you can be safe in.” The video also shows the notice that went out to residents labeled “imminent threat alert.” It was the first week of nice weather when the pop-up occurred. The teacher was unsure “if this was a prom night or if this was just a senior cut day.” However, many have speculated in the comments that it was Senior Skip Day. Regardless, the police have been considering a curfew for Memorial weekend.

New Jersey Upset Over Pop-Up Chaos

Many have commented on the New Jersey teacher’s video, upset that the teen takeover event has ruined their plans. One commenter who originally planned to go this weekend has decided, “We aren’t going this year.” Another says, “What a shame how it deteriorated and how people act there, I would never go there on vacation anymore.” Meanwhile, one says this is why they “go to Cape May, the nonsense won’t go that far.”

Other locals are commenting that they got stuck in the chaos. One claims, “My wife and I [were] riding our bike through there, we turned right around and went home.” Another says this behavior is ruining things for them: “This absolutely sucks for us [residents] that live right next to the beach.” Others have even decided to move, with one saying, “My daughter’s decision on whether to sell her Shore house just got made.”

While the police have yet to issue a formal curfew for this weekend, many have already decided to go somewhere else.
