A doctor in New York City, New York, shared how she pushed a patient’s uterus back into her body after it became attached to the placenta. Describing this as a phenomenon that could happen, but isn’t very talked about, the doctor’s story left the internet shaken, with many users, some of them pregnant, freaking out in the comments.
Dr. Opokua Amoabeng shared the story on TikTok. She is an obstetrical and gynecological (OB-GYN) resident physician who oftentimes shares her thoughts and stories on the platform. The clip attached above, however, quickly became her most popular one. It garnered 898,600 views, 106,700 likes, and more than 2,200 comments.
The New York doctor described how, on certain occasions, despite taking the appropriate precautions, a woman’s uterus can be delivered alongside the placenta. Apparently, this had just happened to her with a patient, and she went on to describe, in detail, how she pushed the uterus back in its place.
“I did tell her what was happening,” Dr. Amoabeng said. “And I said to her, we’re about to have a lot of people in the room.”
Pushing The Uterus Back In
Warning her that what was about to happen could be overwhelming, due to the sheer number of staff members present to help, a nurse gave the mother some medication. This was to make her comfortable, but also to make her uterus relax. Why? So they could “try and just push it back in.”
Still, complications occurred. As they were trying to push the uterus back in, the placenta separated. The patient, as a result, lost about three liters of blood in a minute.
“We had to then rush her to the operating room,” the New York doctor explained. “And then she was under general anaesthesia.”
After getting the patient’s uterus back to its normal size, they managed to return it to its normal place inside the woman’s abdomen. They also gave her a blood transfusion to replace the amount that was lost.
“That can happen. Very, very rare, thankfully,” Dr. Amoabeng concluded. “But it’s one of the crazy OB things that people don’t really talk about.”
Internet Freaks Out
And that’s exactly why her story sparked so many responses.
Some women, thinking about their future pregnancy plans, reacted accordingly, albeit a bit dramatically. One viewer said, “If this happens, can I just tell them to leave it out?” Another one agreed, writing, “Listen, if I EVER give birth again, and that happens, leave it out. I don’t want it.”
Other users further freaked out, with a mother attaching a frightened Barbie face while commenting, “Me watching this at 30 weeks pregnant.” The unlocked fear was further fueled by an anesthesiologist, who said, “There is no patient I have ever gotten to the OR faster than an OB patient.”
Given the nature of the New York doctor’s content, it appears that her newly found followers will continue to be amazed, and also shocked by her OB-GYN stories.
