U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders has recently endorsed Michigan congressional candidate William Lawrence, backing his proposals on Medicare accessibility and tech company accountability. The endorsement did not sit well with some people online, however, who believed that a socialist congressman with a platform focused on environmentalism is not what Michigan needs.
Earlier this week, Sanders confirmed an endorsement for Lawrence, claiming that the candidate is building a truly grassroots coalition. Lawrence then responded that he was “deeply honored” to receive Sanders’ support and would strive to follow his steps in Michigan.
William Lawrence is one of the co-founders of the Sunrise Movement, a group that advocates for action on climate change. He is running for office for the first time as the Democratic nominee for Michigan’s 7th congressional district in the 2026 House of Representatives election. His platform is largely focused on limiting the construction of data centers in Michigan.
Internet Criticizes Michigan Congressman Candidate William Lawrence
While many Michigan voters approved of Sanders’ endorsement of the Democratic candidate, many on X were skeptical, with one user saying, “I’m pretty sure endorsing him will only hurt.”
The main reason these people disapproved of William Lawrence appeared to be his and Bernie Sanders’ “socialist” views. As one seemingly enraged user put it, “ANOTHER DO-NOTHING SOCIALIST IS NOT WHAT WE NEED. Bernie himself has been in office for decades, and the only tangible action he has taken is to rename a post office. The socialists make BIG promises, (…) but do NOTHING.” Someone else wrote, “Another aspiring professional parasite who’s never lived under a socialist regime and is ignoring empirical evidence of epically failed socialist policies.”
Others even slammed Lawrence’s platform as anti-American: “So you hate the American Dream. Then leave. We will never be a socialist country. The people who built successful companies are not the bad guys.”
In any case, polls have previously shown William Lawrence leading in the Democratic primary for Michigan’s 7th District, meaning there is a realistic chance he could be elected. Until then, more right-wing-aligned voters will likely continue to criticize him, while environmentalists and socialists will probably continue to support the Michigan candidate.
