Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis Slammed After Adding Restrictions to TANF Benefits, Such as Tattoos and Theme Parks: ‘Republicans Creating Fake Problems’

Is this too much?

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis recently announced more restrictions on the use of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) cards in the Sunshine State. These new restrictions did not sit well with Florida residents, as many considered them to be “posturing” for conservative voters.

As reported by News 4 Jax, the new restrictions include tobacco, vaping products, drugs, adult content, video games, theme park tickets, tattoos, fortune-telling, and tanning services. At the moment, federal law already bans these benefits from being used to purchase alcohol, gamble, or make purchases at places that offer “adult entertainment.” According to the governor, the idea is to restrict “wasteful or fraudulent” purchases and prevent people from “milking the system.”

The plan still needs to be approved by the federal administration in order to be enforced. However, not much opposition is expected from the Trump administration.

Republicans Criticized for New TANF Restrictions

Floridians quickly became enraged by these changes, believing that they were completely out of touch with reality. One woman who posted on r/Florida said: “I am a single mom and I used TANF in the past. We received $303 for a family of 3. This is the maximum amount, just 101 per person. Definitely not enough to enjoy a fun day out at Disney! The cards don’t even work at a place like that. Alcohol and smokes were never allowed either.”

Someone else answered: “This is posturing. When I was growing up and my family was on EBT the ONLY thing you could buy with the card was items that had nutritional facts on them and no hot food but only at places that accepted it.”

What really irritated some people was that some of these items were not allowed before, such as drugs: “Banning things that were never allowed. What am I missing here?”

One user tried to explain what they believed was the real motivator for the decision: “Republicans creating fake problems, monsters, and stories. Why not fix the real problems that Floridians are dealing with?” Another one added: “Because we need to blame the poor for (checks notes) not having any money. Clearly they’re the problem, not the ones hoarding the wealth.”

It remains to be seen whether the changes will ultimately take effect, but if they do, they are likely to fuel further debate across Florida. Supporters argue the restrictions will help ensure taxpayer-funded assistance is used for essential needs, while critics contend the proposal addresses a problem that either rarely exists or is already covered by existing rules.
