A California congressional candidate, Mai Vang, is facing criticism after videos showed her declining to recite the Pledge of Allegiance during public meetings and ceremonies in Sacramento. The controversy has gained attention online ahead of Memorial Day weekend and during her campaign for California’s 7th Congressional District seat.

The clips spread widely across social media platforms including X and Reddit, where users debated whether elected officials should participate in patriotic traditions such as the Pledge of Allegiance. Some posts discussing the videos received thousands of views, comments, and reactions.

The videos show the California candidate remaining silent during the Pledge and, in some meetings, turning away from the American flag while others in attendance recited it. The incidents reportedly took place during multiple Sacramento City Council and public meetings over the past year.

According to reports, Vang, who is running in a competitive race against longtime Democratic Rep. Doris Matsui and Republican candidate Zachariah Wooden, has previously addressed her decision publicly. In a past social media post, she said she uses the moment to reflect on injustices affecting communities in the United States and around the world. She also said people should not become “numb” to political and social issues.

California Reactions Erupt Over Pledge Refusal

The issue quickly sparked heated reactions online. Many commenters criticized the California candidate and accused her of disrespecting the United States, veterans, and national symbols. “She doesn’t respect the flag or our country. Don’t even think about voting for her,” one user wrote.

Some users questioned whether a person who declines to recite the Pledge should serve in public office, while others argued the controversy reflected broader frustrations with progressive politics and Democratic officials. A number of comments also referenced Vang’s refugee background, with critics arguing she should show more appreciation toward the country.

The discussion also included calls for investigations and criticism of her political views, while several comments became highly personal and hostile. Some users mocked or insulted her directly, with others claiming the controversy could damage her congressional campaign.

At the same time, many online users defended the California candidate’s decision and criticized conservatives reacting angrily to the videos. Some commenters accused critics of hypocrisy, arguing that people who often mock others for being “too sensitive” were now outraged over someone refusing to participate in the Pledge.

Others claimed conservative online spaces discussing the controversy were heavily moderated or filled with bots and alternate accounts. Several users also argued that participation in patriotic rituals should not determine whether someone is qualified for office.

Some commenters criticized the idea of loyalty pledges in general, calling them performative or unhealthy in a democracy. Others argued the California candidate was being unfairly labeled “un-American” because she is openly progressive and the daughter of immigrants.

The controversy continues to fuel debate online as the California congressional race moves closer to the primary election.
