House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries posted on X after joining San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert for a hospital tour in Oceanside, California. In the post and accompanying video, Jeffries said von Wilpert is working to fix the healthcare system so every American can afford to see a doctor and that she will flip California’s 48th District from red to blue in November. Online users responded critically, with many questioning previous Democratic healthcare efforts or calling for broader changes.

Councilmember @marnivonwilpert is running hard to fix our broken healthcare system.

And make sure that every single American can afford to see a doctor when they need one.

The clip shows Jeffries and San Diego City Councilmember Marni von Wilpert at a San Diego County hospital. Von Wilpert speaks at a podium outdoors and says, “The stakes of this election could not be more serious. To flip the US House of Representatives Democratic, we must win California’s 48th congressional district.”

She continues, “The Republican one big ugly bill enacted the largest cut to Medicaid in American history. And that was done to provide their billionaire donors with massive tax breaks.”

Jeffries then states that House Democrats are “committed to fighting to make healthcare affordable for every single American” and to “reversing the Medicaid cuts that will devastate the people of San Diego County, California and in states all across this country.” The footage also shows the pair walking through hospital corridors, including an area labeled Vista Pavilion, and interacting with staff.

According to local reporting, the visit took place at Sharp Tri-City Medical Center in Oceanside as part of efforts to highlight healthcare costs ahead of the November election. Von Wilpert is the Democratic nominee seeking to flip California’s 48th Congressional District, an open seat previously held by a Republican.

In the accompanying post, Jeffries wrote that she “is running hard to fix our broken healthcare system” and “is going to flip this seat from red to blue in November.”

A healthcare worker quoted in coverage of the tour said she sees many undercovered patients, including people who recently lost jobs and lack access to care. Separately, von Wilpert has received endorsements from groups including the National Union of Healthcare Workers, which cited her past work on opioid accountability and mental health access.

Responses to Hakeem Jeffries’ Healthcare Post and Hospital Tour Video

Some users questioned earlier Democratic healthcare policies, with one writing, “What happened to Obamacare? Didn’t work out? How many tries do Dems need?” and another stating, “I thought Obamacare fixed all that. What happened, Hakeem?”

Others pushed for broader reforms or expressed frustration with Jeffries, including one who said, “Medicare for all or your *expletive* tarred and feathered on a rail. No one is buying your corp centrist,” and another who wrote, “You are an Israel kisser. You have no problem wasting billions on Israel and their free healthcare and would deny M4A to US citizens.”

A supportive reply highlighted von Wilpert’s background, stating, “Yes! Also, the PRO Act could transform workers’ rights in America, and Marni von Wilpert actually helped write it!” while another commenter added, “How do you fix it, Hakeem? We need MEDICARE FOR ALL.”
