Representative Hakeem Jeffries posted a video of himself and others on his team asking that Delaney Hall in Newark, New Jersey, be shut down after a congressional oversight visit. The facility was recently protested by anti-ICE demonstrators.

The video begins with Hakeem Jeffries speaking at the camera and saying, “Here in America, immigration enforcement should be fair, just and humane.” He is referring to the conditions at the Delaney Hall detention center in Newark, which allegedly has detained people who have never even had a criminal record.

He continues to list different concerns reportedly discovered within the facility, saying, “This is not America. The lack of access to quality food, that’s not America. The lack of access to adequate medical treatment, that’s not America.”

Jeffries also criticized members of the Trump administration, accusing them of failing to address conditions he said existed at the facility. To this, he says, “they’re engaging in a depraved indifference to human life. And every single member of this Trump administration is going to be held accountable.”

Reactions to Representative Hakeem Jeffries’s Wanting to Shut Down Delaney Hall

Some commenters compared this to Barack Obama when he was in office, with one person writing, “Where were you when Obama put kids in cages, Hakeem?” Some commenters accused Jeffries of exaggerating conditions at the facility, while others argued Democrats were using the issue for political purposes.

Other comments focus on particular political parties and their influence towards the matter. On this topic, one person wrote, “Pay close attention folks! This is an elected representative gaslighting people who he hopes will go over the edge and raise the stakes. There doesn’t have to be a grand conspiracy just aligned interests and a wink from elected officials like Jeffries.

Open your eyes! Hakeem and every other elected democrat is taking full advantage of this topic in order to rile up the people who set fire to your businesses and throw rocks at law enforcement officers, only to later point and call it “Trump’s America” I’m not fooled by it anymore. Are you?”

As the video continues to gain traction on X, more and more users are sharing their opinions in the comments below.
