We’ve grown used to seeing all sorts of bad news around the media lately, so it feels pretty strange whenever we see something good happen. Yet, that’s exactly what is happening in Maryland, or more specifically, Baltimore. Not long ago, a Reddit user shared a graph showing that the homicide rate in the aforementioned city has declined considerably. This led many Redditors, especially those within the state, to praise the authorities who made this possible, as Baltimore seemed quite dangerous a few years ago but is now a much safer place to live.

Baltimore homicides are down over 71% from 2022, YTD.

As you can see in the graph above shared by user DecentGiraffe7, homicide rates in Baltimore, Maryland, have decreased by 71%, which is huge. This is, of course, a comparison with the rates of 2022. As you can see, both that year and 2021 had 138 homicides in the city for the first five months of the year. However, if you look at 2026, homicides in the first five months of the year totaled only 39. Now, that’s still a high number and one that should be alarming, but it isn’t as big as the ones people saw a couple of years back.

When people saw this, they celebrated online, noting that those in charge had been working to make the city safer. Several showered praise on the State’s Attorney and the Police Commissioner.

Maryland Citizens Praise the Authorities Over Decreased Homicide Rates

After people saw the decreased rates, several started praising those who made this possible. While there are still some crimes happening in Baltimore, sadly, and it isn’t crime-free, they still think it is much safer than it was before.

“When you broaden out, these make the 1990s look cartoonishly bad. In 1993, Baltimore had 353 homicides. I can’t even imagine that, and I lived through it.“

Still, there were many others talking about who were the ones responsible for making the city safer, throwing several names into the discussion.

“Genuinely impressive group effort from all parties involved. And given the fact that some of those parties objectively do not like each other, lol, it’s good that they’ve been able to work towards a common goal.“

“Others have said this is thanks to the Police Commissioner and the State’s Attorney. I also want to give some kudos to Mayor Scott and many local leaders for their work with youth groups.“

“Amazing work.”

In the end, regardless of who did it, people are happy after hearing the good news and hope the rates will be better next year.
