A TikToker from New York City recently went viral after sharing her theory on why she thinks “poor White” Americans continue to support President Donald Trump despite his administration creating policies that she believes work against the public’s interests. Her take sparked a heated debate online, with some people agreeing with her analysis while others accused her of not having her facts straight.
In the video, the creator, who goes by @economyvodka, argued that some Trump supporters are motivated more by ideology than policy. According to her, they back the president because they place a high value on what she described as “Whiteness” and the social status associated with it.
“Donald Trump embodies Whiteness and he upholds White supremacy,” the woman said in the viral clip. “And for a lot of poor White people who have accomplished nothing in life, who have very little access to opportunity, upholding something that gives them worth… is more important than fighting for a system where everyone benefits.”
The TikToker used European immigrants as an example and claimed that many arrived in the U.S. poor and with few opportunities, but eventually gained social and economic advantages by being accepted as White. She said that, over time, this created a strong attachment to racial identity among some people, causing them to place more value on preserving that status than on supporting policies that could improve their financial situation.
“This is why there’s always a sort of state of confusion when people say, how can you vote against universal healthcare? Why would you not want more money going to schools? Why are you okay with a politician blatantly taking your tax dollars and pocketing it rather than using it for the greater good?” the woman said.
Netizens’ Reaction to the Viral Video
In the comments section under her post, opinions were split. Some people agreed with the creator’s argument, with one person writing, “Help this is my family and I hate it here 😭.” Someone else referred to Trump supporters as a “cult” and said they “think he’s the messiah.”
Another critic claimed, “Trump has 0 policy! Just spews hate and they eat it up!” while a fourth added, “They keep voting for republicans. Republicans don’t do anything for the working class.”
Other groups, however, challenged the TikToker’s perspective. “I am poor and white and I definitely do NOT support Trump so this is a generalisation,” one commenter wrote. Another claimed, “The employment rate of Black men in America was the highest ever in America’s history during the Trump administration.”
Some questioned whether her argument could be applied to other voting groups. “True but isn’t this kinda like the same reason Black women refuse to abandon voting for Kamala Harris?” one person asked. Another rejected the idea altogether, saying, “Many hyperbolic statements. Obviously someone who has a mistaken view of whiteness. But, as a black woman, it’s not likely she could have a more accurate view.”
As the debate continues online, the video has kept gaining traction on TikTok, generating more than 600,000 views and over 150,000 likes.
