Florida Gas Station Employee Tackles Shoplifter, Holds Him In Chokehold Until Police Arrive: ‘Doing All This For $7.25 An Hour’

Florida minimum wage heroics

A Florida gas station convenience store worker has become the latest lightning rod online after a video of him physically restraining a suspected shoplifter exploded across X. In the footage, posted by @mattvanswol, you see a confrontation over possible theft that quickly spirals into a brawl right in the aisle.

Shelves go down, snacks fly everywhere, and people are glued to their phones, capturing the chaos. The fight drags on for more than four minutes until police finally show up. The employee doesn’t let go the entire time.

I was just sent this video of a man defending his store from a homeless man trying to steal items from his gas station in Florida.

The store associate tackles the man, and puts him in a chokehold until police arrive.

This is how you deal with criminals.

Should get a raise!!! pic.twitter.com/5W2I2s20Wm

If you watch the clip, the male employee in a red shirt grabs the alleged thief, who is described as homeless in the original post, and takes him down in the middle of the store. He climbs on top and looks like he is choking the guy.

A second employee, a woman in the same red shirt, jumps in to help, holding the suspect while keeping an eye out. The suspect thrashes at first, then eventually stops moving.

A woman with dreadlocks films everything just feet away. Snack racks collapse, shelves lean sideways, and chips spill anywhere you look.

@mattvanswol calls the whole thing a heroic stand for the business, and the post went viral almost instantly.

Florida Viewers Spark Debate Online

The video sparked debate online in Florida and beyond, with some sympathizing with the employee’s instinct to act while others questioned every aspect of his decision.

“The fact he’s a homeless man doesn’t justify what he did! He tried stealing which is wrong — whatever happened to him in that store is LEGAL and RIGHT,” one commenter wrote. Another pushed back harder on the employer angle: “I’m sure the multibillion company is so pleased that someone will go so far to defend their honor but they’re more upset at all of the damage you caused to save a few dollars in product.”

The wage question came up immediately. “Doing all this shit for $7.25 an hour… and ik fasho he ain’t no manager,” one user wrote. Others questioned the math entirely: “All that damage gone cost more than whatever he was trying to steal.”

The harshest takes cut straight to the point. “This is not your store,” one commenter wrote. “Your life is worth more than a bag of Doritos. Let him take it and call the police.” Another echoed the sentiment: “Putting your safety and life on the line for a BILLION DOLLAR company you own ZERO % of that pays you PENNIES and contributes NOTHING to your community is insanity.”

Florida law allows store workers to detain suspected shoplifters if there’s probable cause, but they are supposed to do it reasonably without any excessive force, and they can’t drag things out too long. If they go too far, the store could face lawsuits. Right now, it’s not clear if the employee’s chokehold actually crossed any legal lines. There’s no public word yet on any charges or discipline, either.
