At least four Muslim members of the Republican Party were recently invited to leave a party convention in Texas. The episode highlighted ongoing religious and political tensions within American politics and outraged many Texas voters, who viewed the treatment as unacceptable.

According to reports from The Texas Tribune, at least four Muslim members of the GOP attended the party’s recent annual convention in Texas and were surprised by how unwelcome they felt. One of the convention’s topics was “ending Sharia law in Texas,” and some attendees were reportedly told to either convert to Christianity or leave the party.

The outlet interviewed several Muslim Republicans, who said that despite calls for unity, many members appeared unwilling to accept Muslim Republicans within the GOP. Party chair Abraham George was reported to have approached two Muslim delegates and told them to leave the caucus, adding that there was “a Democrat convention happening in a couple of weeks.”

Texas Residents React to GOP Convention’s Controversy

Many Texas residents expressed outrage over reports that Muslim Republicans were being shunned by members of their own party. One commenter said, “The game the GOP is running these days requires a malevolent, threatening ‘them’. They’re not really a Conservative Party anymore.”

Others said they were not surprised by the reports. One user wrote: “Just in case they didn’t know that they weren’t invited to the party, now they know. Plenty of non-white Republicans are finding out that they were backing the party of racism.” Someone else added, “And they’ll keep voting Republican cause they’re easily conned by emotional arguments. Plus, they also dislike women, LGBT, and progressive ideas.”

Another element that irritated users was how “the GOP will tell people of color this and then turn around and make the argument that political gerrymandering can’t possibly be a form of racial gerrymandering.” Other users appeared to agree with that criticism, calling the Republicans “racist.”

There is still a long way to go before the midterm elections, so it is difficult to know how controversies like this may affect the Republican Party. However, the reaction online suggests that some voters believe incidents of this kind could make the party less appealing to Muslim Americans.
