The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas is facing growing scrutiny after a shocking video circulated online. The footage features deputies striking inmate John Anthony Cole while he appeared to be restrained inside the county jail. Officials have confirmed that the footage is authentic and said the sheriff’s office will address the incident publicly on June 17. The video has sparked renewed questions about the use of force in detention facilities and whether the incident was properly investigated.

The footage began spreading across social media platforms over the weekend and gained significant attention after being shared on the r/Arkansas subreddit. The post attracted hundreds of comments and upvotes, with many users criticizing the actions shown in the video and calling for accountability.

According to 5NEWS, the incident occurred on May 9, 2025, at the Sebastian County Jail. The video appears to show Cole being escorted into a room by several deputies before being restrained. While he is being held down, two deputies appear to strike him multiple times as other staff members remain nearby. The footage does not show what happened immediately before or after the encounter, and officials have not yet released additional video or details providing further context.

The incident is now at the center of a lawsuit filed by Cole, who is representing himself in court. The Arkansas man alleges that deputies used excessive force against him and violated his constitutional rights while he was in custody. Cole also claims he was subjected to retaliation and poor jail conditions following the incident, including inadequate access to necessities and medical care. He is seeking significant compensatory and punitive damages.

The case comes with additional context. Cole is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence after pleading guilty to murder, firearm possession, and two counts of attempted capital murder. The attempted murder charges stem from allegations that he stabbed two Sebastian County deputies with a homemade weapon on the same day the jail incident occurred. Despite those allegations, local attorney Joey McCutchen and incoming sheriff Wyatt McIntyre in Arkansas have both stated that the use of force shown in the video should be thoroughly and independently reviewed to determine whether it was justified.

Internet Reaction Condemns Arkansas Jail Video

Online reactions were overwhelmingly critical of the deputies’ actions in Arkansas. Many viewers argued that the footage appeared to show excessive force against a restrained inmate and expressed concern that several people in the room appeared not to intervene. Some suggested the lack of reaction from those present raised questions about whether such conduct was considered acceptable within the facility. “They know there are cameras, and they still act like animals!” one user wrote.

Others focused on accountability, calling for the deputies involved to be fired, investigated, or criminally charged. Some commenters questioned whether supervisors, medical personnel, and other witnesses should also face scrutiny if they observed the incident and failed to report it.

Several users acknowledged Cole’s violent criminal history and the allegations that he stabbed two deputies earlier that day. However, they argued that an inmate’s alleged crimes do not eliminate legal protections while in custody. Many stressed that detention officers are expected to follow established procedures regardless of the circumstances.

The Sebastian County Sheriff’s Office in Arkansas is expected to provide additional information during its planned public statement as questions surrounding the incident continue to grow. Investigations and court proceedings related to the case remain ongoing.
