Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds has promised that, if elected, he will push to lower property taxes on homeowners’ primary residences. The plan is currently controversial among Florida residents, and his remarks angered some locals, who accused him of ignoring the will of the voters.
According to Florida Politics, Donalds recently affirmed that if the constitutional amendment regarding the tax cuts does not pass on the ballot in November, he will pursue the measure after becoming governor of Florida. The candidate intends to use the Tax and Budget Commission to “study all taxes and fees with the goal of eliminating homestead property taxes or at a minimum.”
Should the HJR 1-F measure pass in November, it would increase homestead exemptions to $150,000 in 2027 and $250,000 in 2028. Donalds, who currently serves as a U.S. representative, is considered the Republican frontrunner in the gubernatorial race and was recently endorsed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Florida Residents React to Byron Donalds’ Statements
The gubernatorial candidate’s promises did not resonate well with some Floridians. Multiple users on Reddit’s r/Florida criticized Donalds, saying, “The man has no mind of his own. If it sounds MAGA, he’s all over it without thinking about the consequences. This guy is even dumber than DeSantis.”
Others seemed outraged that the prospective governor would continue pursuing the measure. “So Donalds will push for this scheme even if citizens vote against it? That’s Republican democracy in a nutshell,” someone complained. Another person added, “In other words, he doesn’t care what the people decide.”
Some users also mocked the Republican Party’s rhetoric, saying, “His campaign ads say he’ll stand up to radical democrats and their wasteful spending. What a laugh, democrats haven’t made decisions in Florida in 30 years.”
It remains uncertain whether HJR 1-F will pass, as it requires support from 60% of voters. However, some opponents of the measure are already preparing to campaign against it. As one person in the thread said, “We have to get out and vote. We can’t keep letting the children have the keys to the car.”
