The World Cup continues to be a source of chaos in California, as multiple confrontations have occurred around the games. One such example was a clash between Israeli and Palestinian fans outside of June 15’s Iran vs New Zealand match at Los Angeles Stadium.
A widely circulating clip shows two sets of people exiting the stadium – one group was shouting “Free Palestine,” while the other group sported Israeli flags. A few people from the latter group began to confront the former group, entering their personal space and asking, “Why are you here?” Ironically, that question can go either way, given that neither Palestine nor Israel was playing in that particular World Cup match.
Over on Instagram, people made their feelings about the incident known. One person clarified, “As an American, you ARE welcome here, and we are thrilled to have you.” In a comment presumably directed at the group holding the Israeli flag, someone else called them “The trash of society.” Meanwhile, many people flooded the comments section with Palestinian flags and calls of “Free Palestine.” Someone summed up the comments’ sentiments well by writing, “Come on, internet, do your thing! Find them and overwhelm them with ‘FREE PALESTINE!‘”
People Want to Hold Los Angeles Stadium Responsible
As mentioned, this is far from the first conflict to take place at a Los Angeles Stadium World Cup game. As one Instagram user pointed out, “This shows tremendous negligence on the part of SoFi stadium and law enforcement to not protect these people.” Another person echoed, “No security? At all?” A third shared, “Fans should not be allowed to be subjected to this harassment.” While several videos of people exiting the stadium do show staff in place controlling the flow of traffic, there does not appear to be any security designated to prevent confrontations like this one.
Given that the Olympics are heading to Los Angeles in 2028, one can only hope that the city will learn from the World Cup fiasco and put a system in place to protect attendees.
