A Massachusetts mom got completely dragged on the internet after sharing the unusual seating arrangement her family uses when flying. Out of her family of four, only her husband flies in economy plus, while she and their two children sit together in regular economy. Although there could be scenarios where an arrangement like this would not draw netizens’ ire, her reasoning appeared to fall short in the public eye.
According to the mom, who posts on TikTok as @jackrein316, her husband is 6’2″ and a “big dude,” so he would not be comfortable sitting in a regular economy seat. While this leaves her to handle the kids on her own during the flight, she said she does not mind because the arrangement works for her too.
“The way that it works is that my daughter’s only 5, so I sit next to her, and she doesn’t take up an entire airplane seat, so I do actually get a lot of space,” the mom explained in her TikTok post.
She added, “In some ways, I sometimes get more space, because occasionally what we’ve done is we’ve lift [sic] up all the armrest, and I’ve literally fallen asleep with the kids, and we have the entire three set [sic] of seats for ourselves.”
The woman also joked that her daughter had once interpreted the family’s seating arrangement to mean that her father simply did not want to spend time with them. She recalled her daughter saying that she missed her dad because they never sat together on the plane. The mom assured her that the family would be reunited once they landed, but the little girl responded, “He doesn’t like to sit with us.”
The comment made the mom quickly reassure her daughter that this was not the case.
The woman said she hopes their seating arrangement will improve in the future so that everyone can comfortably sit together. For now, however, she said having only her husband in economy plus makes sense for their family and saves them money.
Netizens Don’t Agree With Her Reasoning
The woman’s explanation did little to win over viewers. Many questioned why her husband got the more comfortable seat while she was responsible for both children.
“May this love never find me,” one comment read. “Girly this is a delusional take,” another said. Someone else wrote, “I’m 6’4″. There is no scenario where I would travel anywhere without sitting next to my wife.” A fourth added, “I can’t even…. There is zero excuse for husbands to pawn their kids off on the wife for everything. I’m actually pissed there are women that still allow this.”
One person also claimed, “He could sit with you and the kids. He doesn’t want to.” Another commented, “Don’t marry a loser ladies.”
Others thought the woman’s daughter was more observant than she was. One netizen wrote, “So the daughter gets it but the adult woman doesn’t. Got it.” Another remarked, “This is wild. Even your daughter has caught on… that should tell you something.” A third said, “It’s not funny that your daughter thinks her dad doesn’t like sitting with you. It’s really sad and needs to be addressed.”
The Massachusetts woman’s video has since gone viral online, gaining more than 300,000 views on TikTok. Despite the backlash, the mom has stood by her decision and appears unfazed by the criticism.
