It doesn’t take much to grab attention in New York. There’s always someone trying too hard to be the focus of the entertainment – this time it was a driver with more swagger than sense. Instead of the cheers, claps, and impressed sighs, what went down provided enough of a spectacle to make repeat viewings essential.
When all was done and dusted, there was some significant damage to two innocent vehicles, along with a guy who became an unexpected Internet star for all the wrong reasons.
Video of the incident shows a Polaris Slingshot attempting to drift in front of onlookers. The driver lost control almost immediately and struck a parked car along the curb.
Rather than pulling over to assess the damage, the driver reversed, hit the gas again, and lost control a second time, striking another parked car a short distance away.
The vehicle reportedly hit a parked SUV near what appeared to be a diner, then became wedged between two more cars in a nearby lot moments later.
No details have emerged about the driver’s identity, injuries, or whether police responded.
Internet Reacts to the New York Slingshot Crash
Commenters mostly landed somewhere between stunned and amused. One person wrote, “Fleeing the scene of an accident and causing another accident? I hope that dude never gets a license again.” Someone else kept it short: “The pressure got to him……twice.”
A different commenter framed it as a twist on an old saying: “Crash into random cars once, shame on you. Crash into random cars twice, well, shame on me.” Another simply added, “The embarrassment gotta be at an all time level there.”
A few comments turned their focus to the vehicle itself. One reads, “Slingshots were already corny, this guy just made them appear worst.”
The timing has a lot to do with the clip’s reach. The New York Knicks recently captured their first championship in 53 years, and the city has seen no shortage of viral moments tied to the celebrations since.
The Knicks’ branding on the Slingshot has fueled speculation that the driver was caught up in that energy, and some online discussion has placed the crash on Quentin Road in Brooklyn, though that detail has not been independently verified.
