A father in Newport Beach, California, suddenly fell asleep while driving, all while his two children were sitting in the backseat. As a result, he got involved in a car accident, and while the kids were alright, it didn’t make it any less scary. He ended up vlogging the before and after, sparking passionate online debates.
The man in question is Jesse Moncur. He is a content creator who shares moments with his family with his 2.4 million followers on TikTok. The clip attached above was far more serious than the others, though, and it soon became viral. It garnered 874,000 views, 84,800 likes, and close to 600 comments.
The California man’s day started at around 3:45 a.m. Jesse, his wife, and their two children got into the car, ready to go for their first road trip as a family of four. After kissing his sons on the forehead and praying, their journey started. By 6 a.m., everyone was awake, and the little fellows had their breakfast.
The lovely moment was cut short, however, as Jesse got involved in a car accident at around 7:45 a.m. He said, “I just got in a car, I fell asleep at the wheel. I need to see what happened.”
A Scary Moment, A Valuable Lesson
Jesse detailed in response to a comment that he had fallen asleep while driving and drifted sideways into another car. The collision woke him up immediately, and he got out of his vehicle to talk to the other driver.
Fortunately, everyone involved, including the other driver and Jesse’s family were okay. The California influencer immediately admitted to dozing off to the other driver and apologized, and they exchanged information shortly before the authorities arrived.
The incident popped on Jesse’s vehicle tires, and the other car had to be towed. First responders talked to Jesse and asked if anyone was in pain, and he answered negatively. After state troopers took his statement, he was given a ticket, with one trooper thanking him for being honest. All the while, Jesse and his wife made sure their sons were doing okay.
Reactions
The video sparked multiple responses, most of them telling Jesse to be more careful moving forward. One viewer said, “Never drive when tired. It’s like driving drunk.” Another one commented, “You should invest in a newer car with safety features. Think about your kids.”
A small number of users were not as understanding, with one asking, “How the hell did you fall asleep?” Another person, however, responded, “Being a dad is hard sometimes.”
Following the car accident, Jesse and his family arrived at their first Airbnb. He said he was thankful that no one was hurt, and vowed to spend more time in “gratitude and appreciation.”
