A video posted by California Assembly member David Tangipa on X is drawing scrutiny towards Governor Gavin Newsom and the state’s nonprofit spending practices. In the video, Tangipa alleges that over $300 million in state funding was directed to nonprofits, with some reportedly having been contracted with a production company that happens to be associated with Newsom’s wife.

Commenters quickly flooded the replies to share their reactions, with many expressing outrage over the allegations. Others questioned whether the practices described in the video are legal and called for additional investigations into the matter.

Nothing to see here in California… Just our Governor directing over $300 million to nonprofits, some of which contract with his wife’s production company that has paid her over a million dollars in salaries. This kind of activity is illegal in a lot of other states, but it is… pic.twitter.com/jESlMXRsim

The video above was posted by David Tangipa, a California State Assembly member representing California’s 8th Assembly District. He has been an outspoken critic of Governor Gavin Newsom and has frequently used social media to highlight issues involving state spending and government accountability.

In the post, Tangipa discusses state funds that he says were directed to various nonprofits throughout California. Apparently, some of those nonprofits reportedly contracted with a production company connected to Newsom’s wife, filmmaker Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

The video’s caption states, “Nothing to see here in California… Just our Governor directing over $300 million to nonprofits, some of which contract with his wife’s production company that has paid her over a million dollars in salaries. This kind of activity is illegal in a lot of other states, but it is legally allowed here in California.“

Tangipa suggests that nonprofits are a form of “legal money laundering,” and accuses the production company of paying Jennifer’s yearly salary of over a million dollars. Specifically, he writes, “We also have a new bill called the “Nonprofit industrial complex” or the Office of Nonprofit Empowerment. This bill would establish a state run office that directs even more funds to nonprofits like CHIRLA and 1000s of others.“

What really appears to be the central focus of the video is Tangipa’s criticism of California’s ethics laws and whether current regulations surrounding nonprofit funding and conflicts of interest are sufficient

Reactions to David Tangipa’s Criticism of California Spending

Several commenters voiced support for Tangipa and thanked him for bringing attention to the allegations. One person wrote, “Hopefully Californians are listening ! It’s time California democrats that continue to vote for their party see for themselves what the rest of us knew all along.”

Similarly, another person wrote, “An obvious ‘conflict of interest ‘ as Newsom heads off into the sunset . The new governor, whom ever it is, will continue to do more of the same, or the ‘other guy will be that leader !”

Others expressed disbelief that the alleged conduct could be permissible under California law. One commentator asked, “Why do we let the criminals make the laws?“

The video continues to generate engagement across social media, with users continuing to debate California’s nonprofit funding practices, state ethics laws, and the broader issue of government transparency.
