Local health advocates and conservative taxpayers across Ohio are expressing deep frustration this week after a federal judge stepped in to halt the state’s upcoming ban on using food stamps for junk food. In a highly controversial decision, U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson scuttled sweeping restrictions across multiple states that would have prevented SNAP benefits from being spent on sugary sodas, energy drinks, and candy.

Earlier this year, the Trump administration allowed states to implement a ban on SNAP recipients using their food benefits to buy soft drinks and candy. Five states sued to reverse the ban and on Monday, a federal judge sided with them. pic.twitter.com/m5COLmRteA

In a post shared on X, CBS News and other outlets reported that a federal judge has swooped in and blocked bans on soda and junk food that took effect earlier this year. It has caused a massive stink, as arguments for and against what should be allowed nutrition-wise have been a sticking point for many voters in Ohio as of late.

Under Governor Mike DeWine’s direction, Ohio had successfully secured a waiver from the Trump administration’s USDA to launch the ban on October 1, 2026, aligning with the federal “Make America Healthy Again” (MAHA) initiative. Instead, a lone, Obama-appointed federal judge chose to double down on the status quo, ensuring that tax dollars continue to flow directly into the pockets of massive beverage corporations. This led many folks to take to social media to voice their displeasure with the situation.

“Hurray for obesity. The gov will give them money to flatten them up, then the gov will pay for them to go to the Dr for diabetes. A perpetual cycle were they will have to keep voting Democrat to get that sweet sweet mountain dew and insulin”

“You dont get luxury when your broke thats the way it is. Or someone please tell me why the [expletive] I go to work?”

“The irony is that fanatic vegetarians, vegans and healthy eating fanatics tend to be political left and the political left news media support reversing the ban on buying junk food with tax payer money. That’s the political left in a nutshell.”

“I’m glad my federal and state taxes are contributing to diabetes and fat kids… bravo for this reversal”

Ohio Conservatives question how she is allowed to make this decision, but the state itself has vowed to go ahead with the ban anyway in the coming months, October 1st, just in time for Halloween shopping and festivities, which will cause an uptick in debates and hot takes galore.
