It’s like Backrooms IRL

Rows upon rows of nearly identical homes. Streets with barely a tree in sight. A drive through a sprawling neighborhood in Richmond, Kentucky, has gone viral after two people filmed what appears to be an endless sea of matching houses. As the camera continues through the development with little variation in sight, many viewers have compared the scene to Vivarium and The Truman Show, sparking a wider discussion about modern suburban design.

The footage comes by way of @itsmejakeaustin, who is a hip-hop producer and recording artist who typically shares content about music production. One of his latest videos, however, takes a detour from his usual music-related content, showing a drive through a sprawling suburban neighborhood in Richmond, Kentucky.

What immediately stands out is the seemingly endless stretch of nearly identical homes, with little variation from one house to the next and hardly any trees breaking up the landscape. The clip has since racked up more than 1.7 million views, over 172,000 likes, and nearly 8,800 comments on TikTok alone.

As they make their way through the development, the driver can barely believe what he’s seeing. “Look, look. I think we’re in a movie. This is like The Truman Show or some [expletive]. It’s like a [expletive] maze,” he says, while his friend simply replies, “This is actually [expletive] crazy.“

As the seemingly endless rows of matching homes continue, the passenger remarks, “This doesn’t make any sense.” But it’s the driver’s final observation that has left many viewers unsettled: “The crazy part is we’ve been driving through this neighborhood for an hour and we can’t get out. But wait, there’s more. It starts again.”

It didn’t take long for the video to spread beyond TikTok, with viewers flocking to the comments to share their own thoughts. While many compared the neighborhood to dystopian films like Vivarium and Don’t Worry Darling, others fixated on the lack of trees, the seemingly endless rows of identical homes, and what they assumed the properties might cost.

Viewers Compare Neighborhood to Vivarium

On TikTok, one user wrote, “This is my nightmare,“ while another added, “This video deadass could be the beginning of a horror movie.” Others focused on the appearance of the development itself. One commenter wrote, “Are trees and plants illegal there? That’s so strange,” while another joked, “This would be ok if they cost $125,000 but they’re probably $400k.”

Elsewhere, on Reddit, the thread was captioned, “What in the Vivarium is this?” One user simply wrote, “My actual hell,” while another quipped, “Plant a [expletive] tree bro.” That prompted a tongue-in-cheek reply: “Sorry that’s against the HOA rules.” Another commenter helped identify the location, writing, “Kentucky for those wondering.”

Whether viewers found the neighborhood fascinating or unsettling, the video has clearly struck a chord. For some, it’s a symbol of how modern housing developments can prioritize efficiency and affordability over individuality. For others, it’s simply another suburban community that will gradually take on more character as families move in, trees grow, and homeowners make the space their own.
