A TikTok video concerning the reported death of Mississippi teen Nolan Xavier Wells has sparked heated debate online. The conversation began after a content creator who goes by @jaytheyapmaster argued that the case highlights why Black people are unsafe around White people. While some viewers agreed with his message, others accused him of making unfair generalizations.

According to ABC News, Wells was reported missing after he did not return with his friends from a boat trip near Horn Island in Mississippi on July 4. Following an investigation by authorities, a body matching Wells’ description was later recovered.

Although investigators believe the Black teen drowned and have said they do not currently suspect foul play, the TikToker seems to think otherwise. His skepticism appeared to stem largely from the fact that the friends who accompanied Wells on the trip were White.

In his video, the content creator said, “Dear White people, black people are not safe in your presence… I grew up with the understanding that most of us have the capacity to do good, including white people. However, white people, when they do wrong, also have the capacity to get away with it because of their privilege.”

The TikToker said learning about Wells’ case reminded him of his parents’ teachings about the challenges Black people face in America. He warned that the teen’s death should serve as a lesson for Black families to teach their children to be mindful of the company they keep and to be intentional about spending time with people who have their best interests at heart.

“Unfortunately, in a world that safeguards them from consequences of their own evil actions. That safety doesn’t tend to be found in white people,” the content creator added.

Viewers React to the TikToker’s Post

The video has drawn over 50,000 views on TikTok. In the comments, some people supported the content creator’s message. “This story and many other stories involving our black children is a lesson. Our kids aren’t safe in white spaces nor left alone with them. It’s true!” one person wrote. Another commented, “Every one of them are unsafe they can only be nice for a very limited amount of time due to them not having a soul.”

Someone else said, “I hate being around yt ppl. They’re racist.” Another urged, “Stay away from white people.”

Other viewers, however, took issue with the message he was spreading. “What happened to Nolan Xavier Wells is heartbreaking, and I understand why so many people are angry, hurt, and scared… But I don’t think the answer is telling people to never hang out with white people or any other race,” one comment read. Another stated, “Black on black crime is higher than white on black so that’s crazy thinking plus no one knows what happened yet.” A third added, “Sometimes black spaces aren’t safe either ….. discernment is key.”

The TikToker is not the only person who has questioned the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death. Since news of the case emerged, social media users have shared a range of theories about what may have happened. However, as of now, the case remains under investigation.
