A Florida man was trying to save a parking space for himself over the 4th of July weekend. However, beachgoers had different ideas in mind. When he tried to claim his spot, they told him saving spots doesn’t exist at Florida beaches, which sparked a wild confrontation.
Posted by TikTok user Divemasterbenn, he had been attending a beach in Florida when he witnessed a man arguing with another beachgoer. In the caption of his TikTok video, Benn said, “Someone thinks a traffic cone reserves a public parking spot at a BEACH on 4th of July.”
Benn saw the man approaching a woman in her Jeep after she took the parking spot, even though he “claimed” it with a traffic cone. Benn intervened and tells him there’s no reason for him to be yelling at the woman over a parking space. It was rightfully hers to claim, as it was a public parking lot at Dania Beach.
Another man parked next to her chimes in with, “Making her move is ridiculous.” But the man who put down the cone explains, “I’ve been saving that spot. That’s why the cone was there.” Benn and the other man tell him there’s no such thing as saving a spot with a cone.
This ignites an argument between Benn and the Floridian, which devolves into shouting. In turn, the man threatens to call the police. Benn tells him to go ahead because they’ll just “tell you the same thing.” He appears to dial the police as he makes threats towards the woman and her Jeep, while maintaining the spot was rightfully his. He maintains his stance that it was rightfully his spot because of the cone he placed down there.
The people surrounding him try to show him there’s another spot he can claim. At this point, he gives up and hangs up his phone, knowing he’s not getting anywhere with them. The beachgoers tell him, “Happy fourth of July!” as he wanders off to get a new parking spot.
The response to Benn’s TikTok video
Given how people reacted to Benn’s video on TikTok, the comments were overwhelmingly against the Florida man. In addition to the typical ‘white trash’ comments, people were quick to explain that the parking space was public.
One commenter wondered why the man had been so hostile about the parking space to begin with. “Is he making money by saving spots and charging for it?” they speculated. It’d been an easy way of getting a quick buck from unsuspecting out-of-towners.
“Ppl nowadays need to understand the definition of PUBLIC,” another commenter wrote. Especially when it comes to parking spaces. It’s first come, first serve.
Another viewer asked, “Where’s the parking patrol guys? I used to go here all the time,” and wondered why the Florida man couldn’t park his bike along the fence.
Fortunately, there doesn’t appear to have been any further escalation. In the comments, Benn confirmed there won’t be a “part 2,” suggesting the tense parking dispute ended there.
