During the Warner Brothers Pictures panel at San Diego Comic-Con, DC unveiled trailers for two of their biggest upcoming films. Both Aquaman and Shazam‘s first trailers were shown during the panel and take on two very different tones.
The first Aquaman trailer shows Jason Momoa returning home to retake his underwater throne. The tone of the trailer has a serious air with comedy sprinkled throughout. Momoa as Aquaman remains as likable as ever in the role but it is yet to be seen if he carry an entire film on pure charm.
Additionally, the trailer gave us our first look at Orm, the villain of the film. Many may take note of the CGI soaked visual style that the film has. We will have to wait for the actual release to see if this art style pays off. Take a look at the trailer below.
The second trailer shown was for DC’s Shazam. Shazam has a completely different tone in comparison to what we have seen so far in the DCEU. From the trailer, we can see that it has a heavy emphasis on comedy. Zachary Levi is seen in the red and yellow spandex first time alongside Jack Dylan Grazer as his friend Freddy Freeman. This lighter tone is a breath of fresh air that the DC universe has been needing for a while now.
Shazam will be an origin story for the character, which is something that we have rarely seen in the DCEU so far. It is yet to be seen how Shazam will tie into the broader DCEU but one can only hope that he will tie in in some way. I for one am refreshed by the idea of bringing in a new character into the DCEU and filling out the universe a little more. The trailer for Shazam can be viewed below.
Aquaman will be hitting theaters later this year on December 21st, 2018. Shazam will come to theaters a little later, dropping on May 11th, 2019.
