A Mississippi mom is being praised for posting on TikTok about how she’s teaching her children to stand up against racism, even if it’s to their own family. She plans to teach them “how to use the privilege that they have as a white person around here to make sure that they’re the ones speaking up.” Her words have rapidly caught attention with over 142,000 views and over 20,000 likes since she posted the video.
She was inspired to make the video after taking her son’s best friend to a July 4th gathering. The mom states that this friend “was the only black person” there, so she prefaced the visit by telling her son to be vigilant for anyone being racist. She states that “obviously [he was] going to be protected” with them. However, she explains that she’s also “very aware of how racist people can be in Mississippi.” It doesn’t matter if it’s her own family, she’s going to call out racist behavior.
While her children are aware of this about her, she also wants to ensure that they know how to do this. She explains, “We have to speak out no matter who it is, even if it’s family.” It is the Mississippi mom’s mission to make sure her children know that if they’re in certain areas and with their non-white friends, they have to be the ones to intervene. She states that it’s her job as a white parent “to educate [her] children simply not on being not racist, but [she] want[s] to teach them and [she does] teach them how to be anti-racist.”
