A black family in Missouri accused a store security guard of racism during a heated confrontation that ended with the entire group being banned from the store. However, the video begins after the incident that apparently caused one man in the group to be banned, leaving important context about the dispute unclear.
A video of the confrontation shows the family standing near the security guard inside the store. The guard initially tells the family that one man in their group cannot return. As the argument continues, he eventually tells the rest of them that they are banned as well.
The family then began arguing with the security guard as they appeared to leave the store. “Who are you? You are a security guard. You are no one,” one of the women told him. The guard responded by reiterating that the man would not be allowed back inside. “He’s still not going to be able to come into the store,” he said.
The family continued arguing with the security guard, prompting him to tell them, “Then go to another store. Why are you in here creating a scene?” The same woman responded, “Because we want to.” The guard then told the family they were banned from the store and would not be allowed to return. “I can ban all of you. That’s my job,” he said.
“You can’t do nothing,” the woman challenged the security guard. He disagreed and told the family that it was time for them to leave. The second part of the video showed the family outside the store, where they continued arguing with the guard. “You guys can’t act like adults,” he told them.
The guard then addressed the man he had banned and clarified that he did not personally have a problem with him. He added that he had spoken with the man outside the store multiple times in the past. The family continued raising their voices as they argued with the guard, prompting him to repeat that they did not know how to act like adults.
“You guys are like kids, man. It’s crazy,” the guard told them. The man from the family then accused the security guard of being “racist.” The video ended with the guard responding, “I know. I know. It’s always about racism.” It is unclear what happened after the video ended or whether the family made any formal allegations against the security guard or the store. The footage also does not show what originally led to the man’s ban, so it does not establish whether race played any role in the earlier interaction.
‘Respect the Professional Tone’: Viewers Side With Security Guard
Many viewers criticized the family’s behavior during the recorded portion of the confrontation and questioned the racism accusation. “Here we go again,” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “I’ve noticed every time someone is called out for bad behavior, the first thing they scream is, ‘You’re racist,’ because you called out their bad behavior.”
Commenters largely sided with the security guard based on what the video captured, with several praising him for staying relatively calm during the increasingly heated argument. “Respect the professional tone,” one person wrote. Another said simply, “Handled very well.”
Others thought the guard spent too much time arguing with the group. “Your mistake was trying to reason with them,” one commenter wrote. Another questioned why the situation wasn’t handled more quickly, asking, “If he was already banned why not just call the cops and have him trespassed instead of turning it into a 45min debate session.”
The racism accusation also became a major focus of the discussion, although many of the comments went considerably further by making broad racial generalizations that had little to do with determining what actually happened inside the store. One commenter offered a simpler assessment: “An A-hole is an A-hole no matter what color you are.”
Commenters largely sided with the security guard based on the portion of the confrontation shown online. The missing context, however, matters. Viewers never see what originally led to the first man being banned or what interactions may have occurred before recording began. The video shows the racism accusation, but it doesn’t provide enough information to determine whether anything before the recorded argument prompted it.
Most viewers came away believing the guard kept his cool while the situation around him escalated. Still, the camera started rolling too late to settle the family’s accusation. Whatever originally got the first man banned happened before the portion viewers saw, leaving one important piece of the argument missing. Whether racism had anything to do with how the confrontation started is something the viral video simply doesn’t show.
