Beyoncé’s surprise appearance at Jay-Z’s sold-out Yankee Stadium concert in New York quickly became one of the night’s biggest talking points, but an opening video showing her giving her husband a haircut has also reignited online debate over his hair. That’s because late last month, Beyoncé was proud about styling Jay-Z’s freeform locs, only to cut them just a few weeks later. Now, fans are skeptical and are leaning further into Jay-Z’s lace front wig rumor.
The clip, which played before Jay-Z took the stage Friday in Bronx, New York, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of his landmark debut album Reasonable Doubt, immediately sent fans speculating about what was in store. Moments later, Beyoncé emerged to perform “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” stepping into the role originally recorded by Mary J. Blige.
The concert marked the first of three “Jay-Z 30” shows at the Bronx ballpark, a series honoring both Reasonable Doubt and the 25th anniversary of The Blueprint. For many attendees, the appearance by Beyoncé was the cherry on top for the homecoming atmosphere surrounding the performances, which have been hailed by fans as a cultural milestone for New York City.
Online, however, much of the conversation centered on the haircut segment. For weeks, social media users have speculated that Jay-Z’s recent hairstyle changes, from long freeform locs to a rounded Afro and now a shorter cut, could indicate he had been wearing a wig or hairpiece. The new footage did little to quiet those rumors.
People online are questioning the authenticity of the hair
The haircut follows a Father’s Day campaign for Beyoncé’s hair-care brand, Cécred, in which Jay-Z’s hair was prominently featured. That advertisement also drew scrutiny from skeptics who argued it was intended to counter rumors about his hair’s authenticity. Jay-Z’s stylists have previously maintained that his hair is entirely natural.
“So they fake the whole thing with his long hair, just for them to pretend like she’s cutting it all off?? That doesn’t make sense,” one skeptical commenter wrote on X. Another explained what started the wig speculation drama, saying, “Nicki [Minaj] said it was a lace front.”
Others joked that the trim signaled a new album era, since Jay-Z was known for doing the same for his previous albums. “He always grows his hair between albums and gets a cut when the new album is done,” explains an X user. Some praised the moment as a playful display of affection between the superstar couple, though that didn’t stop the questions, “I mean this is some WWE. What is he doing turning HEEL?!?”
