A North Carolina woman couldn’t believe her eyes when the funeral home her family worked with for her mother’s passing sent her an advertisement for her death anniversary. Reddit user Adorable-Resident-38 posted to r/mildlyinfuriating, sharing a photo of a card titled “On this day…” in remembrance of her mother. It’s grim enough to imagine a friend sending someone a card to commemorate their family member’s death, but to receive this from a funeral home is, in a way, a spit in the face.
Fortunately, Adorable-Resident-38 wasn’t taking the funeral home’s morbid advertisement too seriously, though she still felt a bit annoyed by it at first. “I saw the humor in it but someone else may not and may be really triggered and hurt by it so I think I will say something,” OP wrote in a comment.
As to what she meant by “humor in it,” Adorable-Resident-38 literally meant the contents of the card, which she believed read “Literally just like it was a pet that died.” Despite OP trying to mask her hurt with humor, thousands of Redditors still expressed their condolences and supported her frustration with the card.
Reddit Didn’t Find the North Carolina Funeral Home’s Letter Very Comforting
“I’m the office manager at a mortuary. We send aftercare cards, but not like that. I would email them and let them know how tacky and frustrating it was,” remarked a commenter in disbelief. One person added how the funeral home is essentially advertising itself to the rest of the daughter’s family, using the late mother’s death anniversary as marketing in a direct and disturbing way.
“Things like this are so horrible,” wrote a Redditor. “Did you forget your mom died? We didn’t. McLean,” joked another, referring to what the funeral home was implying. “Hey, remember the worst day in your life? We’re here to remind you how much it sucked. You’re welcome,” added a third. “That’s…morbid,” expressed a fourth.
As one commenter put it, the first couple of years after a loved one’s passing aren’t easy. Being reminded of it, especially in such a heartless, corporate way, must hurt so much, though this North Carolina woman is doing her very best to hold a smile.
