Green Lake Park has become the latest talking point among Seattle residents after a Reddit post sparked a lively debate over one of its popular wading pools. While some commenters described it as a beloved summertime spot and even a childhood rite of passage that “built our immune system,” others focused on a nearby homeless tent visible in the image, questioning whether it was an appropriate place for children to play.
One Reddit user shared a photo on the Seattle subreddit titled “Seattle’s So Scary.” The post appeared to be sarcastic, pushing back against the idea that Seattle is an especially dangerous city. Instead, the image showed families enjoying Green Lake’s wading pool, although a nearby homeless tent quickly became the focus of much of the discussion.
While the image itself does look great, as it shows several people at the wading pool of Green Lake Park, some users with keen eyes noticed there was a homeless tent next to where the kids were playing, which sparked a debate on whether this place was actually safe or not.
The majority of people focused on the fact that the homeless allegedly don’t stay that long there, while others mentioned how this was a recurring thing to see around the city. On the other hand, some users started discussing the wading pool itself, with some claiming it was a dirty area, while others mentioned it gets cleaned regularly by authorities.
Washington Redditors Discuss the Wading Pool’s Quality and the Park’s Safety
Some commenters looked back on the pool fondly, arguing that it has long been a cherished part of growing up in Seattle. One user joked, “The Green Lake wading pool built our immune system.”
Others, however, were less convinced that the park was as idyllic as the original post suggested. Pointing to their own experiences, one commenter wrote, “Last time I was there, a shirtless guy waving a steel reserve was screaming at all of the kids.” Another focused on the image itself, adding, “There are multiple tents right next to the wading pool; there’s even one in the picture.”
In the end, many commenters agreed that, like most cities in Washington and across the U.S., Seattle has its share of problems. However, they argued that the image did not reflect the dire picture of the city that some people often portray.
