New York Sushi Customer Refuses to Pay Bill After Claiming Staff Laughed at Them: ‘I’m Not Paying for the Food’

A meal at a New York sushi spot took an unexpected turn when a customer pulled out their phone, started recording, and calmly announced they had no intention of paying the bill.

The video was posted to X by the account @MissJoyfulLife and shows a customer at a Japanese restaurant in New York, later identified in the clip as Hobi Sushi, telling staff they felt uncomfortable during their meal.

The claims made in the video, including the customer’s account of being stared at and laughed at, have not been independently verified beyond what is shown on camera.

Throughout the roughly minute-long clip, the customer repeats variations of “I feel really uncomfortable” more than a dozen times while addressing restaurant employees. They say they believe two people nearby were laughing at them, at one point directing comments at someone they identify only as “him,” saying, “He’s literally laughing. Literally sitting there.”

The customer tells staff, “I feel like I’m being laughed at by two people there, people over there,” before adding, “I’m being stared at behind by two people who are sitting there laughing their *expletive* off.”

As the video continues, an employee can be seen listening to the complaint of this customer. The customer then asks, “Do you want to call police or no? Because I’m not paying for the food.” They go on to clarify that their discomfort isn’t directed at the person they’re speaking to directly, telling them, “Not by you. You did nothing. You’re great,” while placing blame on other staff: “The people behind the counter are very rude.”

Before leaving, the customer adds, “You should teach your staff not to laugh at people and stare at them while they’re sitting at a table,” then pans the camera toward the restaurant’s signage before exiting.

Internet Reacts As New York Customer Refuses To Pay

Reaction to the video was largely skeptical of the customer’s justification for not paying. One commenter asked plainly, “Since when is feeling ‘uncomfortable’ a reason not to pay for what you consumed? Is that excuse valid now?” Another made a similar point, writing, “Just because he laughs at you doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay for the meal, girl. They’re two different things, deaw.”

A third pushed back on the framing of the situation entirely, arguing, “So feeling uncomfortable means, you can rip off the owners. And steal. Got it,” while another commenter reduced the exchange to a single line: “‘I’m uncomfortable’ is synonymous with ‘I don’t want to pay.’”

Not every reaction dismissed the customer outright. One commenter offered a more measured take, writing, “If you really laughed in front of them, it would probably be rude in a service setting. If it’s just your own paranoia, then go talk to yourself—love yourself first.”

Under New York law, leaving a restaurant without paying for a consumed meal can be charged as theft of services, regardless of a customer’s stated reason for refusing to pay.
