Virginia Liberals Criticize Rural Republican Voters Amid Decline of Medical Care: ‘The GOP is Pouring Dirt Over Their Graves’

Are Republicans voting against their own interests?

It’s no secret that public investment in healthcare has been languishing under the Trump administration, and reports indicate that rural residents in Virginia have been significantly affected. However, these same residents are a strong voter base for the Republican president, which led other Virginians to complain about them online.

An article published by Virginia Mercury recently highlighted the fact that Donald Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill of 2025 made around $911 billion in cuts to Medicaid nationally over the next 10 years. According to another recent report, Medicaid spending in Virginia could decrease by $31 billion over the same timeframe.

These policies have been strongly supported by Republican politicians and have reportedly affected rural residents more than urban ones.

Virginia Residents Comment on Healthcare in Rural Communities

Discussion about this topic quickly became heated on Reddit’s r/Virginia, as liberal-leaning users accused rural Republicans of voting against their own interests: “They care more about the culture war than they do about being able to see a doctor when their kids are sick.”

Some people argued about the reasons why this could be happening: “They don’t trust the government so losing Medicaid is not a deal breaker for leaving the GOP. (…) As I understand it, they’re perfectly fine going without government help. They’d rather depend on family and church for help than the government.”

Others essentially called rural Republican voters selfish: “People don’t usually change unless something personally affects them. It is sad to see many people vote against their own interests. Literally, their well-being is related to access to healthcare.” Someone else added: “Rural Virginia would rather a million people go without health care if it meant one trans person having a bad day.”

These users also argued that cuts to public healthcare have negative effects that they believe affect society as a whole: “I went to a great doctor, about 45 minutes outside of Richmond. Had been going to him for years. His practice was closed as a result of Trump’s changes, and he had to take a job with in hospital patients only.”

To most people in the thread, however, there was simply nothing to be done, as they believed that the people they were criticizing would not change their minds: “And they will continue their support even when the GOP is pouring dirt over their graves.”
