Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders rejected Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman’s call to step back from Democratic Senate primaries. Fetterman said Sanders’ involvement could make it harder for Democrats to recapture the Senate majority. Sanders dismissed the warning during a CNN interview and pledged to keep supporting progressive candidates nationwide.

CNN aired Fetterman’s remarks before asking Sanders to respond.

Fetterman said Sanders’ involvement could put a Senate seat “really, really in play.” He said Republicans would celebrate if the progressive candidate won. Fetterman questioned Sanders’ motives and told him to “maybe sit a few out.”

Sanders responded by questioning Fetterman’s support among Pennsylvania Democrats. He also raised the possibility that Fetterman could switch parties. Sanders said he would not give much credibility to Fetterman’s criticism.

When CNN repeated Fetterman’s request, Sanders replied, “John, I’m not going to take your advice.”

He named Abdul El-Sayed and Peggy Flanagan among the candidates he would continue supporting. He also pledged to back congressional candidates willing to challenge big money.

The exchange prompted competing arguments over Sanders’ influence, the party’s direction, and Fetterman’s loyalty to Democrats.

One X user wrote, “Bernie is trying to burn down the party that screwed him over in 2016.” Another backed Fetterman’s warning, stating, “Fetterman is correct. Bernie Sanders and the DSA are sabotaging the Democrat Party whether intentionally or not.”

A separate response argued, “How about both of you should sit this out one of them is responsible for giving us Trump 1.0 the other has turned into a DINO.” Another revisited Sanders’ previous presidential campaign, writing, “Ten years after Sanders lost the nomination, but still bullied his way to the Convention—where he chose Tulsi Gabbard to introduce him—our government is occupied by Russia-backed fascists.”

Other users turned Fetterman’s criticism back on him. One wrote, “Maybe sit a few out Fetterman!!! Stop spewing Republican talking points!!!!”

Another stated, “John Fetterman is the new Kirsten Sinema. And unless he change parties, he’ll be driven out just Kirsten Sinema was. We have no room for frauds. The stakes are too high.”

Sanders said he would continue supporting progressive candidates despite Fetterman’s warning. Their disagreement leaves the party’s primary strategy unresolved.
