Did the old saying ever go, something old, something new, something borrowed… and something dead? Because a Washington bride who was supposed to be doing nothing but blushing on her big day instead found what appeared to be a dead cockroach trapped inside her wedding dress.
The video that captured the bizarre incident was shared on TikTok by the bride’s sister-in-law, @slatttshawtyyy, who said they had only made the discovery hours before the ceremony was scheduled to begin.
In the clip, the insect could be seen nestled inside the white lace fabric of the wedding gown, almost completely hidden behind the dress’s intricate embroidery.
Luckily, the bridesmaids came to the rescue and worked together to get the unwanted guest out before the bride walked down the aisle. Armed with a pair of scissors and tweezers, they carefully cut into the fabric and picked away at the material surrounding the insect.
It took some effort, but the group eventually managed to remove the dead cockroach from the dress.
Within 24 hours of going live on TikTok, the video had already gained more than a million views. While it has not been established how the insect ended up there — whether it was intentionally placed inside or somehow became trapped in the dress accidentally — that little mystery was more than enough for people on the internet to start coming up with full-blown conspiracy theories.
Viewers Suspect Something More Sinister
In the comments under the TikTok post, several netizens quickly decided that witchcraft was the answer to why the cockroach was embedded in the wedding dress.
“Can’t convince me that’s not witchcraft,” one person wrote. Another warned, “Miss, that is brujeria… pray over that before putting it over your head or stepping into it.” A third remarked, “This is too specific and odd especially on ur special day be carefullll.” A fourth claimed, “Definitely spellwork or bad intent.”
Others didn’t necessarily have a supernatural explanation but still struggled to believe the insect could have gotten there by accident. “I don’t think it was an accident. How do you accidentally sew a roach into anything??” one comment read. Another viewer agreed, writing, “The fact it was so encased makes me think this was on purpose.”
Some people were so disturbed by the discovery that they urged the bride not to wear the gown at all. “I legitimately would not wear it. That is insane,” one commenter said. Someone else suggested, “Get rid of the dress and find a different one it’s not worth it.”
A few netizens were skeptical of the witchcraft theories, though. One viewer said, “As a witch, everyone claiming witchcraft… no. We wouldn’t put it somewhere so obvious.” Another offered a decidedly less sinister theory. “[The tailor] probably didn’t necessarily sew in a cockroach.. but an egg.. and then that coachroach got bigger and bigger and died bc there was nothing for it to eat,” they commented.
Fortunately, the creepy discovery did not derail the wedding. The sister-in-law later shared another video showing the bride wearing the dress and revealed that everything went off without a hitch. However, she added that they still plan to get to the bottom of how the insect ended up inside the gown.
