A Black hairstylist in Washington, D.C., found herself being questioned by an elderly couple while simply trying to wait for a client inside a residential building. The pair wanted to know whether she was supposed to be there and, when they were unsatisfied by her answer, threatened to involve the police. The hairstylist shared the incident on TikTok and wondered — along with many netizens who watched the video — whether the couple would have treated her the same way if she were white.
The confrontation was already underway when the hairstylist began recording, so it is unclear exactly how she entered the building. According to the couple, residents could potentially be fined for allowing outsiders to enter without being let in by the person they were visiting.
The hairstylist maintained that she had permission to be there and explained that her client was already on his way downstairs to meet her. Still, the couple remained unconvinced.
Couple Threatens to Call Police
As the questioning continued, the hairstylist asked the pair to leave her alone and go about their day. She also made it clear that she was recording the interaction “for her safety.”
Rather than leaving, the couple threatened to call the police. They also took seats across from the hairstylist in the lounge, saying they would wait with her for the client to arrive.
The baffled hairstylist continued to film. She poked fun at the situation and questioned why the pair seemed so concerned about someone who was only there to work. The couple responded again that they did not want to be charged a fine.
Her client eventually came downstairs, confirming what she had been telling the couple all along. But the pair immediately turned their attention to him and asked if he did not know the building’s rules about allowing outsiders inside. He said he hadn’t known about the policy and apologized, although the hairstylist quickly told him that he didn’t need to explain himself to them.
The hairstylist and her client eventually walked away, bringing the standoff to an end.
Viewers Debate Whether Race Played a Role
The incident in D.C. has gotten people talking online, with many viewers in the comments section under the post believing the hairstylist had been singled out because she was Black.
“They are not worried. They are just plain racist,” one person wrote. Another sympathized, “People with brown skin have to go so above and beyond it’s just ridiculous. I’m so sorry.” A third said, “They would never do this if you were white. Never.” A fourth commented, “They think it’s their job to police black people.”
Others were less focused on race and more bewildered that the couple had devoted so much time to the situation. “Why can’t they just mind their business? At the same time, not everyone thought the couple was out of line.
