Radio Station Falsely Announces King Charles Dead With National Anthem and 16 Minutes of Silence as Panicked Staffer Flees Building: ‘The Passing of His Majesty’

The King was very much alive

Listeners expecting an ordinary afternoon of music on Radio Caroline instead heard the broadcast every British station prays it never airs. In the middle of The Barry Marsh Show, the famed former pirate station suddenly declared that King Charles III had died, and the monarch was very much alive.

The message was unambiguous. “We have suspended our normal programmes until further notice as a mark of respect following the passing of His Majesty King Charles III,” the pre-recorded announcement told stunned listeners, one of three solemn messages that aired before the national anthem played and the station’s digital feed fell into roughly 16 minutes of dead air. The presenter, streaming his show remotely, had no idea he had been knocked off the air and kept chatting away to an audience that could no longer hear him.

This week, UK media regulator Ofcom finally revealed how it happened, and the truth is stranger than the station’s original explanation. At the time, station manager Peter Moore blamed a “computer error” for triggering Radio Caroline’s “Death of a Monarch” procedure. Ofcom’s ruling tells a different story: a staff member performing routine maintenance on the studio computer found the restricted obituary files, prepared for the day the King actually dies, and played them “out of curiosity.”

The fallout was instant chaos. The staffer, realizing what had gone out over the airwaves, panicked and fled the building. The station director was on a phone call as the false announcement rolled, delaying the response, and it took roughly half an hour before an apology and correction hit the air. “We apologise to HM the King and to our listeners for any distress caused,” Moore said.

Ofcom Brands the Blunder ‘A Very Significant Inaccuracy’

The regulator found the Essex-based station in breach of two broadcasting rules, one requiring due accuracy in news and one requiring significant mistakes to be corrected quickly, calling the false announcement “a very significant inaccuracy about an issue of particular public importance.” Ofcom received two complaints over the broadcast.

Radio Caroline, which is run entirely by volunteers, told the regulator it took the incident seriously. The staff member was reprimanded and apologized, and the royal-death files have been removed from the studio computer’s desktop so they cannot be accessed the same way again.

The internet, meanwhile, is having a field day with the fiasco. “The rumours of King Charles’ death are greatly exaggerated,” one X user quipped, while another reached for the obvious classic: “‘I’m Not Dead Yet!’ – Monty Python.” Plenty of sympathy went to the fleeing staffer, with one commenter admitting, “Panic and run. I would probably do the same thing,” and another confessing, “I too have panicked and left premises.” The ruling’s detail that Ofcom received just two complaints drew its own dry verdict: “2 complaints. Must be a popular station.” Others simply marveled that the fail-safe had to be spelled out at all: “They need a rule for that?”

As for the King himself, the false alarm never slowed him down. Charles carried on with a full slate of engagements in Northern Ireland the day of the broadcast, and he is currently enjoying his summer holiday in Scotland with Queen Camilla, presumably unaware of just how thoroughly one curious volunteer managed to bury him. For a station that made its name broadcasting outside the rules from a ship in the North Sea, Radio Caroline has once again proven it can make history on the airwaves, just not the kind it intended.
