We all know that technology has become an even more important part of our lives than it was back in the day. Right now, every single thing we do requires an electronic device, the internet, and so on. However, there are certain things that have become a bit too invasive, such as self-checkout machines, which some are still not too fond of. To make matters worse, it seems these machines are now asking for tips, even though there isn’t any customer service involved.

Now they expect us to tip non-humans.

The video was shared by the famous YouTuber Michael Knowles, who recorded the moment when they went to purchase a drink at what seems to be a supermarket. At the beginning of the video, they claim that they didn’t see a single employee. Naturally, they went for the self-checkout station, which is something we see in many establishments nowadays. However, the infuriating part came as the YouTuber was scanning the product.

As you can see in the video, they flip the camera to show the station’s screen, which reads: “Would you like to leave a tip?” The options go from custom to 15%, then 18%, and up to 20%. Before ending the video, Knowles says again, “I have not seen a single employee. I have scanned my own Perriet. And now the robot wants me to tip it.”

This clip quickly became viral, as many do think that self-checkout machines should not be asking for tips. Furthermore, they have become too invasive to the point that they are getting rid of the human element at some businesses, so asking for extra money for things the customer is doing on their own seems extremely strange.

People Feel Self-Checkout Stations Should Be Cheaper

Since this video reached several parts of the internet, comments started pouring in, with the majority showing their disdain for these machines and even suggesting a few things that would make using them better for customers.

“Self-serve should be 15% cheaper…“

“If we scan our own products to check out, we should be getting tipped by the store.“

Others even shared a few ideas on what they’ve been doing whenever a self-checkout machine asks for tips.

“If it has a custom option, I always try to see if I can make the tip negative. It’s worked once.“

In the end, many agree that these stations should not be asking for tips, while others even miss the days when we all saw more employees in these establishments.
