‘Wilted and Molded Asparagus’: Fed Up North Carolina Mother Bashes Assistance and Food Pantries After Being Given Rotten Food

That just seems unacceptable

A North Carolina mom went to receive help from a food bank. Unfortunately, she was less than pleased with the service she received. Instead of actual help, the food bank gave her a pitiful array of food she wasn’t even able to use. Now, she’s being transparent about what is given to people in need and why it’s not okay.

Asheville assistance is a joke. It is bad enough I can’t actually make real meals for a week out of any of the food i was given in the first place… but take away everything molded and expired, we don’t even have a days worth of meals. No fresh produce and no bread. In the box to the left is everything I will be donating because it is full of items my child will not eat (Special K cereal, Pinto Beans, Black Beans, Corn Meal, box milk). All we are keeping from this food box is 2 cans of tomato sauce, chicken soup, 1lb ground beef, dozen eggs that expire in two days, orange juice that expires in two days, jelly, peanut butter and Scooby Snacks. Though we are choosing to give some back because we won’t eat it – there are still not efficient ingredients here to supplement a weeks worth of meals. There is no excuse for giving someone that is just trying to feed themselves expired and molded food. #Asheville #Help

Kyle (@kyleiskye) says that people always ask why people are struggling when there are so many resources available, including food pantries. However, she says that “Asheville assistance is a joke.” Why? In Kyle’s video, she shows how insulting it was to go to a food bank, only to receive literal garbage. Many of the food items were rotten and unusable, and they were given to “families in need.” She shows “moldy cucumbers, moldy blackberries, wilted and molded asparagus,” and more.

Kyle continues to sort through the food, showing mushy tomatoes, expired bread, expired muffins, and more. She shows the full spread to her audience and announces, “This is what they give us when we go to a food pantry. This has to be thrown away.” It’s a bunch of waste and food that’s been expired for a month. Kyle picks up two cans of sparking water and proclaims, “But hey, at least we have some Bubly.”

North Carolina Locals React to Video

Commenters immediately reacted to Kyle’s video, with many of them sharing her sentiment. As one commenter shared, “The monthly food pantry I used to go to gave me clams. Old clams that leaked onto my backseat. My car smelled horrid for days.” Another shared, “Every single time I went to the food pantry I had to throw most of it away.” One commenter added about their experience, “I live in South Texas. At my food pantry all we get is rice and beans. It sucks. I feel ya.”

Others, however, commented that those in need must be thankful for what they get. As one commenter stated, “If it was frozen, it’s fine. Be thankful. There are people who would take it and do something with it. Bread pudding for one, French toast. Apparently you aren’t hungry.” Kyle replied to this: “Nothing was frozen. How unfortunate we live in a world where we’re expected to be grateful for rotten and molded food.” Commenters continue to share their opinions and reactions on Kyle’s video, with many of them agreeing with her that what she received was unacceptable.
