Charlamagne tha God challenged New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries over his shift away from Medicare for All. He questioned what changed between Jeffries’ earlier support and his current position as House Democratic leader.

The segment followed Jeffries’ recent Meet the Press appearance with Kristen Welker.

Charlamagne tha God: "One of the most confusing people in American politics — Hakeem Jeffries. If you follow the corporate money, there's a reason they call him AIPAC Shakur, there's a reason they call him AIPAC Rocky.

Charlamagne initially pointed to corporate PAC money and referenced the nicknames “AIPAC Shakur” and “AIPAC Rocky.” He then turned directly to Medicare for All.

Jeffries indicated on Meet the Press that he does not currently support the legislation. Charlamagne used the response to criticize Democrats for clearly stating what they oppose without offering alternatives.

“What changed?” he asked.

Jeffries became a Medicare for All co-sponsor in 2019 and an original co-sponsor of the 2021 bill. By 2026, he no longer co-sponsored or supported the legislation.

Charlamagne questioned what changed during that period and connected the reversal to Jeffries’ rise within House Democratic leadership.

“Did your beliefs change when your title changed?” he asked.

He closed by returning to Jeffries’ position that health care is a right. Charlamagne questioned how Jeffries would guarantee that right without supporting Medicare for All.

Hakeem Jeffries Medicare for All Reversal Sparks Debate

The exchange drew competing reactions over Jeffries’ changing position and Charlamagne’s criticism.

One X user wrote, “I don’t like Charlemagne at all, but he hit Jeffries right in his hypocrisy. I don’t want Jeffries to lead the house. He’ll be pretty useless.”

Another wrote, “Jeffries only said he was for #MedicareForAll when it didn’t seem possible, so he didn’t take it seriously. Now #MedicareForAll IS possible, so he stops lying and comes out against it.”

A separate response stated, “Jeffries sold out. Happily receiving AIPAC money. Literally talks out both sides of his mouth. He can’t be trusted, he’s gotta go.”

Another user wrote, “Taking a long time to figure it out. Democrats let Bernie fill in the blanks for their policies, then take corporate cash once they’re in office.”

Others pushed back on Charlamagne. One wrote, “Ummmm @cthagod because M4All isn’t as an easy sell as the online folks make it out to be.”

Another stated, “Of all the people to go after- you go after him? Bru- go after Byron or Stephen A. But not Hakeem. We need to keep the ones we have.”

Jeffries’ shift away from Medicare for All has become the focus of renewed scrutiny following the interview. While he argued that his position reflects the realities of governing, many viewers remained unconvinced, saying they still wanted a clearer explanation for why his stance had changed.
