A Tennessee mom says her kindergartener was already begging for a break just two weeks into the school year. The little girl’s tearful plea for “just one break” had TikTok debating whether kindergarten was already wearing her out or whether she was simply adjusting to her new routine.
Posted to TikTok by @loveablelashae, the creator joked that kindergarten had already pushed her daughter to the point of “crashing out.”
The video shows the child crying as her mother tells her she has to go to school for another five days. The girl repeatedly says, “I just need a break.”
Shortly before the video ends, the Tennessee creator asks her daughter what she needs a break from, pointing out that she doesn’t have much to do besides school. The creator later clarified in the comments that her daughter is fine, but is spoiled and not a fan of homework.
TikTok Debates Kindergarten
The comments quickly picked up on the irony of a kindergartener already asking for time off. “Week 2 of kindergarten and she’s already requesting PTO,” one commenter joked. Another commenter looked ahead to the real challenge: “wait until she learns about going to wooorrrkkkk
But some viewers weren’t laughing at all. One person praised the girl’s ability to recognize when she needs downtime, writing, “Being able to express ‘I need a break’ is heartwarming. We didn’t get mental health days or anything growing up.”
Another viewer said they would have given the kindergartener exactly what she was asking for. “Aww Bless her heart. I would have let her stay home for the day. sometimes school can be alot,” they wrote.
Of course, the kindergarten sabbatical request did not get unanimous approval. One commenter pointed out that the children had already enjoyed a lengthy break before school started. “They all had a break all summer long. Go to bed at night,” they wrote.
Another defended the structure of school, arguing, “School is preparing them for life. They need structure. She will be fine. She gets the weekends. holidays, etc.”
One commenter focused on the bigger adjustment happening behind the tears, noting that young children go from spending much of their time playing at home to suddenly following a structured classroom schedule for hours each day.
Whether she needed a genuine mental health day or was simply discovering that kindergarten comes with responsibilities, viewers couldn’t help but relate. At only two weeks into the school year, she was already asking for the childhood equivalent of PTO.
