Florida Disney World Guest Says Wheelchair-Accessible Hotel Room Falls Short of ADA Needs: ‘This Is a Physical Liability’

How about a refund?

While vacationing at Disney World in Florida, a woman shared a video on TikTok of what believed to be below the standards for wheelchair users. She gave a tour of her room, pointing out the apparent flaws she found to be the most strugglesome.

@Disney Parks Disney resorts… your person told me Disney doesn’t expect solo disabled travelers because they need help. So the rooms accessible accommodations are the bed and shower! #dobetterdisney #disney #solodisney That’s flipped me to crashing out after i dismissed her.

On her personal TikTok, Andrea (TikTko/Andreadalzell) is on camera visibly upset over the room she had booked and expected the business to be “at the bare minimum of the ADA.” Through bouts of tears, she criticizes multiple aspects of the room she felt caused friction with her disability. Andrea uses a wheelchair to get around.

One of the problems is the coffee pot—she says it’s too high up. Although she managed to get the coffee pot on a lower surface, there wasn’t an outlet to plug it in, anyway. If she wanted coffee, she’d have to reach up and risk tipping over a hot drink.

Speaking of temperature, the thermostat is placed just a smidge outside her reach without exerting too much effort. It’s tantalizingly close. The same is almost said of the wardrobe. Andrea opens the wardrobe, saying, “I cannot reach that.” And even the shower has the knobs that once again requires her to stretch for the controls.

How viewers responded to Andrea’s frustration with her hotel room

Other than being generally displeased with how Andrea was treated, many of her viewers were outraged, insisting some kind of action. “I work at Disney and I’m showing this to a resort manager today, I am so sorry, this was extremely ignorant of all your needs. Thank you for bring this to our attention,” claimed one commenter.

One viewer told Andrea she should be really petty by calling them whenever she needed something that was inaccessible. “Call them when you need coffee,” she suggested, and more. And if they weren’t quick enough, “lodge an additional complaint,” she wrote.

Another commenter claiming to have knowledge in the field wrote, “I’m an interior architect, so I’m very very versed with the ADA. This is completely unacceptable and I am so sorry. This is NOT an ADA compliant room AT ALL.”

Andrea argues the room is a “physical liability” and is going to make a report. In an update video, she shared that she spoke with two employees, one of whom, a manager, was more concerned with asking about her “personal preferences traveling by herself,” Andrea claimed. Unfortunately, she didn’t get any really answers as of right now.
