A video from a Michigan Walmart shows employees physically restraining a young Black man during an alleged shoplifting incident. The footage, widely shared on social media, shows a tense exchange involving Walmart employees, a bystander, and the young man.
Viewers say the man appears to have special needs, and many are questioning why the situation became physical instead of waiting for police to arrive. The video has received thousands of reactions, with many people calling for Walmart to be held accountable.
The incident happened at Walmart Supercenter in Big Rapids, Michigan, according to a video shared by X user @LRHN_Cash. The footage begins with a person on the ground near the store’s entrance while an employee, a bigger man wearing a gray striped polo and plaid shorts, is bent over him.
Several bystanders can be seen nearby as the incident unfolds outside the store’s Grocery entrance near the fire lane.
As the video continues, a younger man wearing a light gray T-shirt, jeans, and Crocs is seen standing and confronting the employee who restrained him. The two appear to argue while gesturing and raising their voices. At that point, a woman in a pink T-shirt steps in and can be heard arguing with staff.
As the woman continues arguing with the employees, the man who had been holding the young man lets him go, allowing him to stand up. The young man then thanks the woman after she tells him that she recorded the entire incident on camera. He, appearing to have special needs, tells her, “You’re my sweetheart,” before compassionately hugging her.
He hugs the woman several times as she continues standing up for him and arguing with the people involved. She questions why they treated him that way when they knew he had special needs and asks why they would handle the situation like that. The video ends with the argument still going on between the woman and the people involved.
A separate account of what happened is also circulating online. According to a witness statement shared by the Instagram account @realblackgirlpolitics, a woman leaving the Big Rapids Walmart said she heard a boy identified as Levi repeatedly yelling, “Leave me alone!”
The witness said Levi has special needs and was shopping with his case manager when the encounter with store security escalated. She alleges that security grabbed him, took him to the ground, and restrained him around the neck.
Internet Reacts to Michigan Walmart Restraint
The video has sparked strong reactions online. “I was holding back tears when I first watched it. That’s literally a child; what the *expletive* is wrong with these racist employees,” one commenter wrote. Another was more blunt, saying, “Who ever had that man down on the ground needs his *expletive* kicked. Daily.”
Several people focused on Levi’s apparent special needs and argued that Walmart employees should have recognized the situation before using physical force.
“I hate when ppl act like they can’t tell when someone is special needs like come on bro,” one commenter wrote. Another added, “Women, children, and now special needs people. True cowards.”
Others questioned whether employees were allowed to physically restrain a customer at all.
“I thought that the employees weren’t allowed to put their hands on a person. They were supposed to wait for the police to get there,” one commenter said.
As of this report, Walmart has not issued a statement about the Big Rapids, Michigan incident. Neither the store’s account of what happened nor the allegation that Levi was restrained around the neck has been independently verified.
