A free cup of soda usually isn’t worth risking your reputation over, but a Michigan man decided to take one anyway and filmed the whole thing. Facebook user Javin Lacey originally shared the roughly 13-second clip, later reposted by the X account @ClownWorld, turning a quick grab from a self-serve fountain into a much bigger conversation because of the caption over the video.
The clip shows the man walking up to a Pepsi fountain machine inside what appears to be a fast-food restaurant or convenience store deli area. He takes a disposable cup, fills it with soda, and takes a drink before walking toward the counter with the cup still in his hand. He passes a Coca-Cola machine on the way.
A toddler stands nearby throughout the video and appears to watch what is happening.
The video drew attention not only because of the act itself, but also because of the caption placed over it. The text reads, “When Black People thirsty and dont feel like paying,” turning the incident into a racial statement rather than simply showing someone taking a drink without paying.
The X account @ClownWorld reposted the video to criticize the decision to film and share the act, calling it “embarrassing.”
The child’s presence also became a major point of criticism. Many commenters argued that filming the incident in front of a young child and then posting it online made the decision even more questionable. Several commenters assumed the toddler shown nearby was the man’s child, although the video itself does not establish their relationship.
Internet Reacts to Michigan Man’s Soda Video
The video quickly drew criticism across social media, with many commenters focusing on the racial wording in the caption. One commenter criticized the man for “stealing, and can’t even be bothered to throw the used cup away,” adding that “someone has to go clean up after him.”
Several commenters also focused on the child. “Right in front of his child. He must be so proud, *expletive*!” one user wrote. Another argued that “committing a crime with your child around should be an extra charge.”
Others said incidents like this could eventually affect self-serve soda stations for everyone.
“It will come to the point where self-serve won’t be a thing anymore. You can thank people like this guy for ruining it for everyone,” one commenter warned.
The brief clip also does not establish whether the drink was actually taken without payment, despite the implication of the video’s caption. It is unclear from the video whether the man meant the caption as self-deprecating humor, satire, or something else.
