A Michigan teen faced backlash after sharing a video criticizing Christians who oppose Muslims in Dearborn.

The teen’s video came at a time when Dearborn, Michigan, had recently become the site of protests led by Christian activists opposing what they described as the growing influence of Islam in the city. One of the most prominent figures involved was Jake Lang, a far-right activist who organized the “Christian Crusader March” with Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell.

On August 18, hundreds of protesters and counterprotesters gathered outside the Henry Ford Centennial Library, where a Dearborn City Council meeting had been moved because of concerns about the expected crowd. Lang and his supporters used anti-Islam rhetoric during the demonstration, while counterprotesters defended Dearborn’s Muslim and Arab American communities. Police in riot gear were deployed to separate the opposing groups, and authorities said 22 people were arrested during the demonstrations.

The teen began his video by calling what Jake Lang planned to do in Michigan “absolutely disgusting.” He identified himself as a Christian and pointed to his tattoo of Jesus, while also explaining that he had lived in Dearborn his entire life. He appeared to provide this context to explain his perspective before describing Lang’s plans as a “Christian takeover.”

The teen clarified that Christians and Muslims had coexisted in Dearborn for decades, adding that Muslims had been part of the city’s community for a long time. “There’s absolutely no problem with that,” he said. He then argued that Dearborn does not “need saving,” despite claims made by some protesters. The teen also rejected the idea that Christians such as himself were being oppressed by Muslims. “That’s simply not true,” he said.

He continued defending Dearborn’s Muslim community, saying that he had never been attacked for being a Christian. “The majority of my friends are Muslim, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that,” the teen said. He then added that, in his experience, no one in Dearborn was trying to change the way America is governed.

“There is no Sharia law in Dearborn,” the teen added. He then described people in the city as kind and generous, rejecting the idea that Dearborn was being taken over. “I don’t think Dearborn is being taken over by anything,” he said. He ended the video by encouraging people in Dearborn to continue doing what they were doing.

Viewers Attack Michigan Teen for Defending Muslims

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers criticized the Michigan teen over his defense of Muslims in Dearborn, with several comments also containing anti-Muslim rhetoric. “Totally clueless kid‼!” one person wrote. Another commenter said, “This kid thinks personal friendships cancel out ideology. That’s exactly how countries lose their culture one generation at a time.”

More people criticized the teen, with some making claims about Islam and questioning whether he was genuinely Christian. “Because he’s listening to their lies and deceptive speech. Suicidal empathy is exactly what this is. Or, he’s really become a Muslim and lying about being a Christian, using Taqiyya, to make it sound like there is peaceful coexistence,” one person wrote. On the other hand, some viewers agreed with the teen’s perspective. “Went to Deerborn for Ramadan because my Muslim bestfriends invited me. As a White male born into a Christian family I’ve never been more welcomed by a religious community in my life,” another person said.

The video sparked a broader conversation about the heightened tensions between some Christians and Muslims in America, particularly in Dearborn. It also led to discussion about how differing opinions on religion and the community’s future can result in heated disagreements and backlash from people on both sides.
