An Iowa woman was left confused after finding a package of meat at her local grocery store labeled “Unknown – New Scale Item.” The unusual label, combined with the meat’s dark skin, red flesh, and attached claws, quickly caught her attention. She filmed the strange find and shared it online, where millions of viewers began trying to figure out exactly what kind of meat she had discovered.

The woman, who uses the TikTok account @tyleahtrotter940, uploaded a 14-second clip showing the packaged meat. The video quickly gained several million views and sparked a large discussion in the comments, with viewers offering their own guesses about what the mystery meat could be.

The short clip shows a package of meat priced at $11.15 and weighing 1.015 pounds. The meat appears to have dark skin and red flesh, while what look like claws remain attached to the piece. The unusual appearance was strange enough on its own, but the label made the discovery even more confusing.

Iowa Woman’s Mystery Meat Has TikTok Guessing

Many viewers quickly guessed that the meat was alligator or crocodile, particularly because the attached claws appeared similar to those found on alligator feet. Some commenters suggested that it could be alligator meat that had not been properly entered into the store’s system, which could explain the unusual label.

Others questioned why a grocery store in Iowa would sell the product without clearly identifying it. Several commenters specifically mentioned Hy-Vee and wondered how the store could be selling what appeared to be reptile meat. Some even questioned whether selling the product in a regular grocery store was legal. However, the comments did not establish whether the meat was actually alligator or whether its sale violated any rules.

The mystery quickly turned into a source of jokes. Some viewers compared the meat to dragon parts, while others joked that it looked like something from Fallout 76. One commenter simply asked, “Call the health department. What store is this?”

Others were much more confident about the meat’s identity. One commenter said, “That’s alligator, and some good unknown food tastes like chicken.” Another commenter familiar with Cajun cuisine explained that alligator is commonly eaten in parts of Louisiana and told others to educate themselves.

Several viewers also offered cooking suggestions, with one saying to put it “in a boil with some garlic and Zatarain’s.” Others were far less willing to take the risk, with one commenter joking that they would rather survive on Ensure drinks than eat meat with claws still attached.

The price the Iowa woman showed also caught people’s attention, with viewers questioning why the apparent alligator meat was selling for nearly the same price as beef.

Whether it was alligator, crocodile, or something far more mysterious, the commenters seemed to agree on one thing: “Unknown” is not exactly a reassuring label when you’re shopping for dinner.
