At the corner of Winnemac and Winchester in Chicago, Illinois, sits an apartment building with quite a history among locals. Some of the past tenants have had appalling alleged experiences, but to the unaware and uninitiated, it just seems like an unremarkable property. That is, until, as a passerby and Reddit user Phixed did, notice the telling signs posted on the property’s windows.
“I’m surprised this is the first time I’ve seen something like this,” wrote Phixed, referring to the concerning signs on the building’s windows in their post. The most notable is the one claiming the property has no hot water. And, according to locals, this sign and others have been on the apartment for months.
Locals Claim the Warning Signs Have Been Up for Months
“Those signs have been there for months lol walk by it all the time,” remarked a commenter. “Hopefully it’s vacant and they left them there. Either way, crazy.” Another user chimed in, supporting the claim: “These signs have been up for a while. I’m glad they’re doing what they can to warn potential renters.”
One Redditor shared a photo of the building with another sign in its window. This time, it was warning people of a mice infestation. Another person in the comments who claimed to live there backed the sign, saying, “Used to live there, the apartment complex is the worst and the landlord refused to do [expletive]. Dude verbally told me my cat could handle all mice coming into my studio. Total douchebag.”
If mice and no hot water were bad enough, one user said their girlfriend had an awful experience living in the cursed apartment herself. “My partner just moved out of this building. She had to deal with non-existent shower pressure, roaches, and no hot water,” the commenter recalled, adding how the landlord demanded $2K rent despite these living conditions. “This is insane,” exclaimed a user.
Despite all this, people allegedly continue to live there but warn others off from ever considering to rent the place. For that, they’ve earned the respect of Redditors. “These tenants are the GOAT. They even have a spotlight on the sign at night to light it up,” said a local. At the very least, would-be tenants are warned before ever stepping through the door.
