It appears that almost anything could become campaign material in Ohio, as Senator Jon Husted has found himself at the center of controversy over the alleged use of a deceased family’s images in a campaign advertisement, according to a Reddit post. In the post made by the brother of the deceased on behalf of the family, he laid out their claims, stating that on April 11, 2026, they lost his sister, Lynnea, her husband, Luke, and their one-year-old son, Logan, in a crash on I-71 in Delaware County.

My sister Lynnea, her husband Luke, and their one-year-old son Logan were killed on I-71 in April. Their photo is now in a Husted campaign ad, and nobody asked us. We want it taken down.

The family recounted spending the months since trying to grieve, support one another, and navigate the criminal case while maintaining some measure of privacy. However, they discovered that footage from the crash site and a photograph of the three of them were being used without their consent in an advertisement from Senator Jon Husted’s campaign. The photograph was a friend of the family, who holds the copyright and did not give permission for it to be used. According to the family, they would not have agreed to its use if asked.

They stated firmly that their grief is not raw material for a campaign, and their images are not public property to be repurposed for anyone’s advantage.

The family said they did not go public immediately. Instead, they contacted the campaign privately on August 17 by email and certified mail, which was delivered on August 19. A week later, they said they had received no response, while the advertisement was still running.

They firmly requested that the advertisement be taken down and that their family’s images and tragedy not be used in political messaging by any campaign going forward, particularly calling out the senator in question.

“This is not a statement about immigration policy, and we are not making one for any party or candidate. It is a statement about our family,” the statement read. “Our grief is not raw material for a campaign.”

Netizens Went Wild Over the Senator’s Alleged Actions

Social media users expressed sympathy for the grieving family while also calling for the advertisement to be taken down. “Disgusted by their use of your personal tragedy for their own purposes. It’s truly vile. I’m so sorry you have to go through this. It’s terribly wrong,” A user empathized.

Another user criticized the senator, describing the alleged action as shameless. More sympathy poured in for the family, with some people even calling for the senator to step down. Another user highlighted how disgraceful the situation appeared, writing, “I am so sorry for your loss. Thank you for speaking up. It always makes me feel weird when politicians do these types of ads to garner sympathy. I keep seeing it & it makes me feel icky each time. Using your family’s great loss to get votes is shameful.”

A netizen summed up their frustration over the campaign’s alleged lack of response, stating, “That you privately contacted the campaign first and then were ignored speaks volumes about Husted. To me this is simply disqualifying.”

The controversy reminds us that people’s moments of grief should be treated with sensitivity and respect, regardless of their position or the potential political gain involved.
