Virginia doctor Krista Edelman wasn’t looking for a Batgirl origin story when a live bat crawled into her mouth. According to WWBT, it was early morning while Edelman was sleeping that she dreamt of a mouse trying to get into her mouth. This dream was actually more real than she realized when she pulled a bat right from between her teeth.
At first, the doctor thought she was still dreaming. But when she felt the hair on its body and stared at it, that’s when it clicked. “This is real life…So I went from like my nice slumber to somewhat panicked within probably like 2 seconds,” Edelman told interviewers. Fortunately, she claims she hadn’t been bitten.
“It was kind of soft. So, it wasn’t painful at all. It was just a little bit unsettling,” Edelman recalled, though that didn’t stop her from waking up her husband with her screams. He was able to capture it and put it into a bucket.
What might be more surprising was how Edelman went on about her day after waking up to a bat inside of her mouth. It wasn’t until she called a colleague, another doctor, that she later considered what she would do in case any diseases had been transmitted into her mouth. The bat was taken in and tested negative for rabies, but Edelman went had already got through vaccinations just to be safe.
Needless to say, people were aghast over what happened to this doctor in her sleep. For some, it unlocked a new fear while sleeping, while others couldn’t fathom what possessed a bat to crawl into a person’s mouth, of all places. “Nature is NOT playing with us anymore!!” exclaimed a commenter on Instagram.
“It’s so expensive to get those shots but rabies is an awful thing,” added another user. Some people joked about how Edelman must sleep with her mouth wide open for such a thing to occur.
Krista Edelman was lucky that the bat didn’t attack her in her sleep but was merely looking for a place to rest. However, her nonchalant reaction by still going to work like normal goes to show that even doctors can fail to realize how important it is to have their own health checked. After all, there’s no telling where that bat had been.
