One New York woman confronted workers at a Staten Island city office, accusing them of ignoring her housing case after she filed a complaint against one of their employees. She called on Mayor Zohran Mamdani to step in, saying she has been waiting months for a new apartment lease to be finalized and fears she could become homeless.

The incident was shared by TikTok user lovie_always and quickly gained several hundred thousand views. Many viewers sympathized with the woman, while others shared their own experiences dealing with New York’s housing and social-service systems.

In the video, the woman confronts staff and demands that Mamdani visit the Staten Island office to see what she described as a lack of work being done. She shows parts of the office and accuses the workers of knowing each other, being “in cahoots,” and refusing to help people.

Staff members attempt to get her to leave, but she refuses and continues walking around the office while recording herself and explaining her situation. She also says she filed a complaint against a worker and believes that affected how her case was handled. At one point, she pleads for Mamdani to intervene, writing in the video’s description, “Please help me, I don’t wanna be homeless.”

The New York woman says she signed a lease for a new apartment in April, but months later, the lease still has not been finalized. She later explained that she was evicted from her previous apartment last year after accusing her landlord of stealing her electricity. She took the landlord to court but said the case did not go in her favor.

She then spent six months in a shelter before returning to live with her parents. According to the woman, after signing the new lease, she discovered that issues involving her former landlord were still affecting the process and said she had to go to the city to get the matter stopped. She says she is still waiting for the new lease to be completed and that the prolonged housing problems have severely affected her mental health.

The reaction was largely sympathetic, with many commenters saying they believed the woman and sharing their own experiences with housing assistance and city services.

One commenter wrote, “She is not lying. To get help with electric bills, you have to have a disconnect. You have to be low, low to get help. Not cool. Sorry, miss lady. Praying for you.” Another said, “This is why I’m moving out of NYC. You have to fight too much just to live. You have to fight for housing, fight for food, fight for respect, fight racism, fight for jobs. It’s tiring.”

A commenter studying to become a social worker suggested that compassion fatigue could contribute to poor treatment, saying workers can become overwhelmed and begin projecting their frustrations onto clients.

Another viewer shared their own experience, writing, “HRA is the worst! I got arrested and sent for a psych evaluation for speaking up. They have no respect, compassion, or customer service skills.”

For the New York woman, the viral confrontation was about more than a frustrating office visit. She says she simply wants her housing situation resolved before she has nowhere else to go.
