Georgia Star Raven-Symoné Dragged After Questioning Her Disney Character’s Blackness as Rachel Lindsay Sounds Off: ‘She’s Not That’

Race Debate

Raven-Symoné’s latest controversy isn’t disappearing quietly. The Georgia-born Disney star has spent days getting dragged online after a resurfaced podcast clip showed her questioning why viewers considered her That’s So Raven character, Raven Baxter, Black.

The viral moment came from Raven’s Tea Time with Raven & Miranda podcast, where guest Kalen Allen described Raven Baxter as “Black as [expletive].”

Raven immediately challenged him. “Was she Black?” the actress asked before questioning what exactly made the character feel Black to him.

She later pushed Allen to imagine the characters without their skin color, suggesting they be made green before asking what race viewers would associate with them based only on what they said.

That argument left plenty of longtime Disney fans completely baffled.

“Raven Baxter would hate Raven-Symoné,” one TikTok user wrote in a reaction that quickly picked up thousands of likes.

Another viewer struggled to make sense of the distinction at all.

“She was literally Black??? She is literally Black????” they wrote before adding, “I’m so confused????”

Others mocked Raven’s suggestion that viewers imagine the characters as green.

“Baby, isn’t green a colour,” one commenter joked.

Another responded even more bluntly: “Even if it’s green, it will still be Black.”

Rachel Lindsay Says Raven-Symoné Has Shown a Pattern

Former Bachelorette star Rachel Lindsay has now joined the growing debate. Speaking on her Higher Learning podcast, Lindsay pointed toward episodes of That’s So Raven that dealt directly with Black History Month and other parts of the Black American experience.

She argued that Raven’s latest comments appeared to fit a larger pattern of the actress distancing herself from how audiences perceive her identity.

Raven-Symoné Sparks Backlash After Questioning Race of Character Raven Baxter

Lindsay described Raven as repeatedly “reminding people that she’s not that.”

Fans made a similar point in the TikTok comments.

One viewer noted that the Disney series dealt directly with Black history and racism, arguing that claiming Raven Baxter was not Black risks erasing some of the representation the character provided.

Another asked, “Was there a whole episode talking about Juneteenth?”

The backlash has also resurfaced Raven’s controversial 2014 comments to Oprah Winfrey, when she said she did not identify as African American and preferred simply “American.”

There is important context, however. Raven has since clarified that she was not denying being Black, but distinguishing Black identity from the African American label. Allen has also stressed that Raven Baxter was unquestionably Black to him and pushed back against people taking the recent podcast exchange beyond what was actually said.

That context hasn’t stopped viewers from wondering how Raven Baxter herself might react to the debate.

I think this is considerably better than the previous draft because the TikTok reactions now do real work throughout the article rather than being tacked on at the end.

And I would seriously consider changing the headline to this version. “Raven Baxter Would Hate Raven-Symoné” is sensational, funny, directly tied to the character at the center of the controversy, and backed by a highly engaged real reaction. It feels much more like the Daily Celebrity headline strategy you’ve been building around.
