A dispute broke out this week in Salisbury, Maryland, between customers at a laundromat located near a Pep Boys auto repair shop. An older white man allegedly told a group of young people that they were going to get deported, leading to a heated argument that eventually drew several other customers into the dispute.
The confrontation sparked strong reactions online, with many viewers condemning the older man’s alleged remarks while others defended him and criticized the younger group.
A bystander who witnessed the incident shared footage of the confrontation on TikTok. According to her account, she had gone to the laundromat shortly after 7 a.m. when two young men and a young woman came in to do their laundry.
Not long afterward, she heard an argument going on and looked over to see one of the young men responding to the older man.
The young man later claimed that the older man had been looking at his group in a “really weird” way from the moment they entered the laundromat. He alleged that the man eventually told them he was going to call ICE and get them deported.
That remark apparently set things off, and the young man said he started recording for his safety.
In the video, the young man accused the older customer of being racist. As soon as he heard that, the older man got up from where he was sitting and walked toward the young man, briefly getting close to him and his phone. He then suddenly backed away, picked up his own phone, and started recording the young man and his companions too.
An attendant at the laundromat saw that things were escalating between the two and quickly stepped in. She warned that she would call the police if they didn’t stop.
The older man returned to his seat, but the young man protested that he had antagonized them first. The attendant, however, said that, from her perspective, the older man had simply been there doing his laundry and told the young man that both sides had escalated the situation.
At that, other people inside the laundromat, including the bystander who shared the video, started coming to the young group’s defense. They explained that the group had done nothing to provoke the older man and criticized the attendant for appearing to place equal blame on them.
Netizens React to the Maryland Laundromat Incident
In the comments, several viewers said they found the older man’s alleged actions outrageous. “The racism in this country is killing us,” one person remarked. “Calling Ice is the last little bit of power maga has,” another commenter said, appearing to assume that the man was a Trump supporter. “People are so ignorant ! This world is not getting any better, it’s getting worse actually,” someone else added.
The attendant’s handling of the confrontation also came under scrutiny. “The employee knew she was wrong putting [sic] it on both of them. He was being the aggressor making remarks and getting in his face,” one comment read. Another agreed, “The attendant should know the story before she comes out of her mouth go watch the camera [sic].”
A few netizens, however, defended the older man and criticized the younger group. “The old guy was right. Respect your elders buddy,” one commenter wrote. “The old guy did nothing wrong,” another chimed in.
The confrontation did not escalate further after the other customers intervened. The older man eventually gathered his things and left the laundromat, bringing the dispute to an end without the police appearing to get involved.
